Ahafo Mine
The Ahafo mine is one of the largest gold mines in the Republic of Ghana and in the world. The mine is located in the center of the country in Brong-Ahafo Region. The mine has estimated reserves of 17 million oz of gold. The company has been accused of "human rights abuses and irresponsible practices" by Earthworks, an environmental organization, and others. Nonetheless, from its Ahafo and Akyem mines, Newmont is also the largest gold mining conglomerate in Ghana, (that is if one doesn’t consider Gold Fields’ interests in Asanko). Open-pit Mining
Open-pit mining, also known as open-cast or open-cut mining and in larger contexts mega-mining, is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth from an open-air pit, sometimes known as a borrow. This form of mining differs from extractive methods that require tunnelling into the earth, such as long wall mining. The Akyem are an Akan people. The term Akyem (Akem, Akim or Aki) is used to describe a group of four states: Asante Akyem, Akyem Abuakwa, Akyem Kotoku and Akyem Bosome.
