Agusan (province)
Agusan was a province of the Philippines. It was created on August 20, 1907, by Provinces of the Philippines#History, Provincial Government Act No. 1693, and dissolved on November 14, 1967, by Provinces of the Philippines#History, Republic Act No. 4979. History Prior to its creation as an independent province, Agusan was divided between the provinces/districts of Misamis (province), Misamis, and Surigao (province), Surigao during the Spanish colonial period. In 1907, Agusan was separated from Misamis, and Surigao creating the Agusan province through the sub-provinces of Bukidnon, and Butuan. The sub-province of Bukidnon became an independent province in 1914 through Act No. 2408 and Butuan sub-province assumed the name of Agusan. Both Agusan and Bukidnon were put under the Department of Mindanao and Sulu from 1914 to 1920. In the Philippines, provinces ( fil, lalawigan) are one of its primary political and administrative divisions. There are 82 provinces at present, which are further subdivided into component cities and municipalities. The local government units in the National Capital Region, as well as independent cities, are independent of any provincial government. Each province is governed by an elected legislature called the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and an elected governor. The provinces are grouped into seventeen regions based on geographical, cultural, and ethnological characteristics. Butuan
Butuan (pronounced ), officially the City of Butuan ( ceb, Dakbayan sa Butuan; Butuanon: ''Dakbayan hong Butuan''; fil, Lungsod ng Butuan), is a 1st class highly urbanized city in the region of Caraga, Philippines. It is the ''de facto'' capital of the province of Agusan del Norte where it is geographically situated but has an administratively independent government. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 372,910 people. It served as the former capital of the Rajahnate of Butuan before 1001 until about 1521. Misamis (province)
Misamis was a province of the Philippines located in Mindanao. Originally a Spanish-era district, became a chartered province on May 15, 1901 ( Philippine Commission Act 128). The province was dissolved in 1929. History Misamis takes its name from an old settlement at the mouth of the Panguil Bay once populated by Subanen, now the city of Ozamiz. Misamis is believed derived from the term kuyamis, a term for a sweet variety of coconut. However, as a result of continued raids by Moros from Lanao, the Subanens retreated into the interior and Visayan and Bukidnon settlers occupied the coast. Misamis was part of the province of Cebu until it was made into separate corregimiento in the late 18th century. Surigao (province)
Surigao was a province of the Philippines. Originally a Spanish-era district, became a chartered province on May 15, 1901 ('' Philippine Commission Act 127''). The province was dissolved on 1960. History Rajah Siawi and Rajah Kulambo, members of the nobility of the Surigaonon and Butuanon people, respectively, were encountered by the Magellan expedition in 1521 on the island of Limasawa (which was a hunting ground for the rulers). Antonio Pigafetta describes them as being tattooed and covered in gold ornaments. Pigafetta also records the name of the Surigao region as "Calagan".
