Agostino Cottolengo
Agostino Cottolengo (22 October 1794 – 8 April 1853) was an Italian people, Italian painter. Biography He was born in Bra, Piedmont, Bra, the younger brother of Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo. With vocation for design, In 1810, he enrolled in the Accademia Albertina of Turin. He participated in some of the revolutionary upheavals of 1821. After a stay in Turin, he returned to Bra, where he established an art school. He painted for the churches of Bra and surroundings. From 1832 to 1834, he completed four canvases depicting the ''Life of St John the Baptist'' for the church of the Battuti Neri (Black Hoods). He painted a large oval ''Martyrdom of St Andrew'' for the church of Sant’Andrea; now found in the Santuario Nuovo della Madonna dei Fiori. He painted a ''Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè surrounded by the poor'' and a ''Sant’Antonio Abate'' for the parish church of San Giovanni. Bra, Piedmont
Bra (, ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Cuneo in the northwest Italian region of Piedmont. It is situated southeast of Turin and northeast of Cuneo in the area known as Roero. Bra is the birthplace of the feminist philosopher Adriana Cavarero, politician Emma Bonino, and of the activist Carlo Petrini, founder of the Slow Food movement and of the world's first University of Gastronomic Sciences, whose main campus is located within Bra's municipal boundaries at Pollenzo. Bra is also home to "Cheese", a biennial international festival organised by Slow Food which features the makers of artisanal cheeses from around the world. In 1997 the event attracted some 150,000 visitors. Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo
Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo or Joseph Benedict Cottolengo (3 May 1786 – 30 April 1842) was the founder of the and is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. Early life Joseph Benedict Cottolengo was born on May 3, 1786, into a middle-class family, in Bra, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. The eldest of twelve children (six of whom died in infancy), on 2 October 1802 he became a Franciscan tertiary. In 1805 he entered the seminary at Asti. Two years later it was closed, and he was forced to continue his studies at home. Cottolengo was ordained a priest on June 8, 1811. Assigned as a curate to Corneliano D'Alba, he completed his doctorate in theology in Turin, and in 1818 was accepted as a canon of the Basilica of Corpus Domini in Turin. Cottolengo donated all his gifts, donations, fees for preaching, and Mass stipends to the poor.
