Agathangjel Çamçe
Bishop Agathangjel (secular name Vangjel Çamçe; 1877 – 1946) was an Albanian Orthodox cleric and important figure of the early Albanian Orthodox Church. He was a staunch supporter of the autocephaly of Albanian Orthodoxy and a close collaborate of Fan Noli, founding father of the Albanian Orthodox Church. He was metropolitan bishop of Berat and was a member of the Holy Synod of the Albanian Orthodox Church. He was born in the city of Korça in 1877. In 1913 he emigrated to the USA, where he distinguished himself as an activist of the Albanian National Movement. In 1919 he was ordained a priest in New York, where he served for two years preaching to Eastern Orthodox Albanians in the Albanian language. While in America, in the same year he laid the foundations of Saint Mary’s Orthodox Church in Natick, Massachusetts, one of the centers of the Albanian diaspora and its patriotic movement. His Grace
His Grace or Her Grace is an English Style (manner of address), style used for various high-ranking personages. It was the style used to address English monarchs until Henry VIII and the Scottish monarchs up to the Act of Union (1707), Act of Union of 1707, which united the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England. Today, the style is used when referring to archbishops and non-royal dukes and duchesses in the United Kingdom. Visarion Xhuvani
Metropolitan Visarion Xhuvani (14 December 1890 – 15 December 1965) was the primate of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania from 1929 to 1936. He was a main contributor to the autocephaly, and a close collaborator of Fan Noli. Life Visarion Xhuvani was born in the small Orthodox community in the "Kala" neighborhood of Elbasan, an old neighborhood inside the Elbasan Castle, in the Manastir Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire (present-day Albania). He was son of Joan and Efthimia, a member of the prominent Xhuvani family, the same as the scholar and linguist Aleksandër Xhuvani. He finished the elementary school in his home town, following with Rizarios Hieratical School in Athens. He studied theology in Athens afterwards. Kaninë
Kaninë is a settlement in the Vlorë County, southwestern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality Vlorë. It is home to the Kaninë Castle. Name The name of the fortified settlement of Kanina was attested for the first time at the beginning of the 11th century AD in Byzantine Greek as (in plural form). The toponym is significant for the history of the Albanian language since ''Kanina'' represents a toponym that shows no sign of the dialect phenomenon of rhotacism, which is explained by the fact that the settlement was recorded with the name ''Kanina'' in a period during which rhotacism in Albanian was no longer active for some time. Autocephaly (; from el, αὐτοκεφαλία, meaning "property of being self-headed") is the status of a hierarchical Christian church whose head bishop does not report to any higher-ranking bishop. The term is primarily used in Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches. The status has been compared with that of the churches (provinces) within the Anglican Communion. Congress Of Berat
The Congress of Berat, also known as the Albanian Orthodox Congress, was a meeting held on 13 September 1922, in Berat, Albania among Albanian Orthodox faithful. The congress decided the autocephaly of the Church of Albania. According to the decisions of the Congress, religious services could be held in the Albanian language. Albanian Language
Albanian ( endonym: or ) is an Indo-European language and an independent branch of that family of languages. It is spoken by the Albanians in the Balkans and by the Albanian diaspora, which is generally concentrated in the Americas, Europe and Oceania. With about 7.5 million speakers, it comprises an independent branch within the Indo-European languages and is not closely related to any other modern Indo-European language.
