Afon Tâf High School
Afon Tâf High School () is an 11–16 mixed secondary school in Troed-y-rhiw, Merthyr Tydfil, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, Wales. ''Afon Tâf'' is the Welsh language name of the River Taff which flows past the school. History Built a cost of around £750,000 the school opened in September 1967. Pupils from Quakers Yard Grammar School, Troedyrhiw Secondary School and the Pantglas Senior School in Aberfan transferred to the school. The whole school was renovated between 2014 and 2017, as a cost of £12 million. The project was undertaken in stages to minimise the impact on the work of the school. Troed-y-rhiw
Troed-y-rhiw (, translation: foot of the slope) is a large community village in the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. Its population at the 2011 census was 5,296. It features the Troed-y-rhiw railway station. Governance The community shares a border with the electoral ward of Plymouth, which elects three county councillors to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. At the May 2017 elections the ward re-elected three Labour Party councillors. Community Archives Wales In 2007 the Troedyrhiw Environment Forum joined the Community Archives Wales programme. Cameron Terry Coxe (born 18 December 1998) is a Welsh professional footballer who plays as a defender for Boreham Wood. Early life Coxe was born in Merthyr Tydfil and attended Afon Taf High School. Club career Cardiff City Coxe began his career at Cardiff City, joining the club's youth academy at the age of seven before signing his first professional contract in February 2017. He made his professional debut during a 2–1 defeat against Burton Albion in the second round of the EFL Cup on 22 August 2017. However, Coxe did not feature for the first team for another two years. Huw Lewis (born 17 January 1964) is a Welsh Labour Co-operative politician who served as Minister for Education and Skills from 2013 to 2016. Born in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Lewis represented the Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney constituency in the National Assembly for Wales from 1999 to 2016. Aberfan
Aberfan () is a former coal mining village in the Taff Valley south of the town of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. On 21 October 1966, it became known for the Aberfan disaster, when a colliery spoil tip collapsed into homes and a school, killing 116 children and 28 adults. Geography Aberfan is situated toward the bottom of the western valley slope of the River Taff, on the eastern slope of Mynydd Merthyr hill, about south of the town Merthyr Tydfil. The Taff runs north-to-south through the village; at the upper side of the settlement, on the western outskirts, a disused Glamorganshire Canal bed and a railway embankment run parallel to the river. Quakers Yard
Quakers Yard ( cy, Mynwent y Crynwyr) is a village in the Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, situated where the Taff Bargoed Valley joins the Taff Valley. Quakers Yard is part of the Community (Wales), community of Treharris. History The early place name for the district was 'Rhyd y Grug' or 'The Ford of the Rustling Waters'. This ford was a simple and easy crossing place of the nearby River Taff, close to its junction with the smaller Taff Bargoed river. The ford was replaced in later years by the narrow stone bridge over the River Taff. Quakers Yard railway station opened in 1858. During the early 17th century those who 'dissented' from the King's Religion were persecuted. This often took the form of imprisonment, or death. River Taff
The River Taff ( cy, Afon Taf) is a river in Wales. It rises as two rivers in the Brecon Beacons; the Taf Fechan (''little Taff'') and the Taf Fawr (''great Taff'') before becoming one just north of Merthyr Tydfil. Its confluence with the River Severn estuary is in Cardiff. The river supports several species of migratory fish, including salmon, sewin (sea trout), and eel. Course From its confluence at Cefn-coed-y-cymmer, the river flows south, passing several towns. It picks up a few tributaries, such as the River Cynon, River Rhondda, Bargoed Taf and Nant Clydach.
