Affane
Affane () is a small village in west County Waterford, Ireland, situated near Cappoquin and the River Blackwater. History References to the town of Affane are limited to its inclusion on a list dated 1300 and an incident in 1312, but the presence of a church and castle 300m apart suggests the presence of a medieval settlement. The Battle of Affane between the Desmond and Ormonde clans was fought in the area in 1565. The ruins of a Church of Ireland church are located within a graveyard. The parish church of Affane, listed as Athmethan and valued at over £6 in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-1306) was located south of the ruins. By the mid 16th century it had been united with the church of Dungarvan, but in a visitation of 1588 it was in the Deanery of Ardmore. The Battle of Affane (Irish: ''Cath Áth Mheáin'') was fought in County Waterford, in south-eastern Ireland, in 1565, between the forces of the Fitzgerald Earl of Desmond and the Butler Earl of Ormond. The battle ended in the rout of the Desmond forces. It was one of the last private battles fought in Britain or Ireland. Causes – a private war The South-west of Ireland had been dominated by the Old English Fitzgeralds of Desmond and the Butlers of Ormond since the 13th century. The vast Desmond lands spanned the northwest and east of Munster, across the modern counties of Kerry, Cork, and Waterford from the tip of the Dingle peninsula to Lismore Castle and the mouth of the River Suir. Affane Cappoquin GAA
Affane Cappoquin GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Cappoquin, County Waterford, Ireland. The club was formed in 1969 with the merging of Affane GAA and Cappoquin GAA. At present, the team is called Cappoquin when playing hurling and Affane when playing gaelic football. Its finest hour in football came in 1974 when, having beaten Stradbally in the quarter-final and The Nire in the semi-final, Affane defeated Dunhill by 1-8 to 0-6 to win its only Waterford Senior Football Championship title. Affane went on to represent Waterford in the Munster Senior Club Football Championship, losing to Austin Stacks of Kerry. As Cappoquin, the club has reached one Waterford Senior Hurling Championship final, losing to Mount Sion in 1956. Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond and 3rd Earl of Ossory PC (Ire) (; – 1614), was an influential courtier in London at the court of Elizabeth I. He was Lord Treasurer of Ireland from 1559 to his death. He fought for the crown in the Rough Wooing, the Desmond Rebellions, and Tyrone's Rebellion. He fought his rival, Gerald FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond in the Battle of Affane in 1565. Birth and origins Thomas was born about February 1531. Gerald Fitzgerald, 14th Earl Of Desmond
Gerald FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond ( – 1583), also counted as 15th or 16th, owned large part of the Irish province of Munster. In 1565 he fought the private Battle of Affane against his neighbours, the Butlers. After this, he was for some time detained in the Tower of London. Though the First Desmond Rebellion took place in his absence, he led the Second Desmond Rebellion from 1579 to his death and was therefore called the Rebel Earl. He was attainted in 1582 and went into hiding but was hunted down and killed. Birth and origins Gerald was born about 1533. Cappoquin
Cappoquin, also spelt Cappaquin or Capaquin (), is a town in west County Waterford, Ireland. It is on the Blackwater river at the junction of the N72 national secondary road and the R669 regional road. It is positioned on a sharp 90-degree bend in the river and lies at the foot of the Knockmealdown Mountains. The town is a few miles from Mount Melleray and Lismore, County Waterford. History Evidence of Mesolithic settlement in the area was discovered during an archaeological dig, at nearby Lefanta, during the 1980s. Ancient fortifications in the area include ringforts in the neighbouring Lyre East and Fadduaga townlands, and records of a former medieval castle within Cappoquin Demesne. The Munster Senior Club Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the AIB Munster GAA Football Senior Club Championship) is an annual Gaelic football competition for the champion clubs of each county. It has been organised by the Munster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1964. The series of games are played during the autumn and winter months with the final usually being played in late November. The prize for the winning team is the O'Connor Cup. The championship has always been played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team loses they are eliminated from the championship. Dunhill GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Dunhill, County Waterford, Ireland. The club enters teams in both GAA codes each year, which includes two adult hurling teams and one adult Gaelic football team in the Waterford County Championships. The club has won the County Senior Hurling Championship twice, defeating Ballyduff Upper in 1978 and Mount Sion 1979, and the Senior Football Championship once, when it defeated Tramore in 1975.
