Aerolíneas Nicaragüenses S.A., operating as Aeronica, was an airline based in Nicaragua. Headquartered in the capital Managua, it operated scheduled passenger flights within Central America, as well as to Mexico City and the United States from of its hub at the city's Augusto C. Sandino International Airport. History Aeronica was founded in 1981, as a consequence of the demise of LANICA in earlier that year. Between 1985 and 1990, when the United States embargo against Nicaragua was in effect, the airline was banned from serving the important United States market. Further, Soviet-built Tupolev TU-154M were introduced into the Aeronica fleet as spare parts for US-made aircraft such as the Boeing 707, Boeing 720B and Boeing 727 could not be acquired. Líneas Aéreas de Nicaragua, operating as LANICA, was an airline from Nicaragua. Headquartered in the capital Managua, it operated scheduled passenger flights within South and Central America, as well as to the United States. History The carrier was founded in as a subsidiary of Pan American Airways, with this airline initially holding 40% of the company. Domestic services began in 1946 with Boeing 247 equipment. The company bought the assets of a local airline called Flota Aérea Nicaragüense (FANSA) in 1950, acquiring the control of the lucrative routes to the mining towns of Bonanza and Siuna in the north. Nicaragüense de Aviación (also known as NICA) was an airline based in Nicaragua. Its main hub was the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport. The commercial airline was a full associate member of the Grupo TACA alliance of El Salvador. History NICA was founded in 1992 from the remains of Aeronica and commenced operations from Managua to Miami. In 1994, the Grupo TACA acquired 49% of NICA and reorganized the airline without government intervention. In 2004, the airline ceased operations and merged with TACA Airlines. Its domestic flight duties were given to Nicaragua's domestic flag carrier, La Costeña, who also joined the TACA Regional alliance. The Boeing 720 is an American Narrow-body aircraft, narrow-body airliner produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Announced in July 1957 as a Boeing 707, 707 derivative for shorter flights from shorter runways, the 720 first flew on November 23, 1959. Its type certificate was issued on June 30, 1960, and it entered service with United Airlines on July 5, 1960. A total of 154 Boeing 720s and 720Bs were built until 1967. As a derivative, the 720 had low development costs, allowing profitability despite few sales. Compared to the 707-120, it has a length reduced by 8.33 feet (2.54 m), a modified wing and a lightened airframe for a lower maximum takeoff weight.
