''Advaitic Songs'' is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Om, released on July 24, 2012. The album has received a generally favorable response from both fans and critics, though its reception was more mixed than past works. The album has a 67 on Metacritic, indicating "generally favorable reviews". As with ''Pilgrimage'' and '' God Is Good'', ''Advaitic Songs'' album cover again visits Iconography from Christianity. The cover of the album features an image of John the Baptist. Om (band)
Om (sometimes stylized as OM) is an American doom metal band from San Francisco, California. Formed as a duo in 2003 by the rhythm section of the band Sleep (bassist Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Hakius), Om is currently a trio consisting of Cisneros, Emil Amos (drums), and Tyler Trotter (guitar). History Om's earliest works incorporate musical structures similar to Tibetan and Byzantine chant, as heard on the debut album '' Variations on a Theme''. The band's name itself derives from the Hindu concept of Om, which refers to the natural vibration of the universe. Every album from ''Pilgrimage'' onward features Eastern Orthodox iconography in the cover art. Om's first three albums feature Al Cisneros on vocals and bass and Chris Hakius on drums. Pandit Hom Nath Upadhyaya (4 July 1943 – 7 September 2016) was a Nepali tabla player who specialized in Hindustani classical music. Upadhyaya served as royal court musician in Nepal. Early life and education He was born on 4 July 1943 (20 Ashar 2000 BS) in Gyaneshwor, Kathmandu to father Tulsi Prasad Upadhyaya and mother Bhagirathi Upadhyaya. He received training in tabla from Pandit Ramji Mishra, Pandit Shambhu Mishra, and Ahmed Jan Thirakwa. In addition, Upadhyaya obtained a B.A. in English, History, and Sanskrit from Gorakhpur University and an M.A. in Music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad, India. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is an American musician, composer and sound artist who records under the moniker Lichens. In live performances as Lichens, Lowe incorporates spontaneous arrangements of voice and modular synthesizer patch pieces. Lowe was previously a member of 90 Day Men before beginning the moniker. In the past, Lowe would use acoustic and electric guitars, and on some occasions, percussion. Lichens' first release was ''The Psychic Nature of Being'', a three-track album recorded as a one-time improvisation without overdubbing. Holy Sons is a one-man solo band built around American songwriter and drummer Emil Amos. Amos is notable for releasing "genre-bending" albums, according to ''LA Weekly'' music reviewer Chris Martins, and for being a prolific songwriter; one account in ''Spike Magazine'' suggests he has written over a thousand songs. Al Cisneros
Al Cisneros (born September 23, 1973) is an American musician. He is the lead singer and bassist for stoner rock/ doom metal bands Sleep and Om. He also was a member of Shrinebuilder and Asbestosdeath (the precursor to Sleep) and has put out nine releases as a solo artist. Music career Cisneros' earliest musical interests included an appreciation of Black Sabbath, in particular their first four albums. In 1989 he formed the sludge metal band Asbestosdeath, taking up bass and vocal duties, with Chris Hakius on drums and Matt Pike and Tom Choi on guitar. Asbestosdeath released two EPs in 1990.
