Adriana Kaplan Marcusán
Adriana Kaplan Marcusán (Buenos Aires, 19 December 1956) is an Argentine anthropologist and Director of the NGO Wassu Gambia Kafo (WGK) and the Wassu Foundation of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She is expert in sexual and reproductive health with a focus on the prevention of female genital mutilation (FGM). Biography Adriana Kaplan Marcusán was born in Buenos Aires on 19 December 1956. She is a professor of Anthropology of Health at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Executive Director of the NGO Wassu Gambia Kafo and the Wassu Foundation of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and Director of the Chair Knowledge Transfer. Female Genital Mutilation
Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and female circumcision, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The practice is found in some countries of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within communities abroad from countries in which FGM is common. UNICEF estimated, in 2016, that 200 million women in 30 countries—Indonesia, Iraq, Yemen, and 27 African countries including Egypt—had been subjected to one or more types of FGM.
