Adrian Douglas Berry
Adrian Douglas Berry (1922-2007) was an Alberta politician who led the Alberta Liberal Party in 1966. Berry was born in Millet, Alberta. At 17, he enlisted in the Canadian Army during World War II and served as a tank commander in Italy and North Africa until he was injured and evacuated to England. After the war, Berry earned his Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta and taught briefly in Edmonton before joining the National Life Assurance Company, eventually becoming an executive. He later moved to Calgary and, in 1964, was elected to Calgary City Council as alderman for Ward 3 and served in that position for nine years. Millet, Alberta
Millet is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is approximately south of Alberta's capital city of Edmonton. History The Town of Millet was named in honour of August Millet, who was believed to be a canoeist for Father Lacombe. (Another possible source of the name is that it is named after French painter Jean-François Millet, a favourite of railway tycoon William Cornelius Van Horne, who also named nearby Hobbema after Dutch painter Meindert Hobbema.) On June 17, 1903, Millet was proclaimed a village by an Order-in-Council of the Northwest Territories. By 1908, Millet's first councillors were elected. In October 1927, a disastrous fire destroyed many of the buildings along the east side of Railway Street. In 1950, the Board of Trade built a community hall and gave it to the Village. 1965 Canadian Federal Election
The 1965 Canadian federal election was held on November 8, 1965 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 27th Parliament of Canada. The Liberal Party of Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson was re-elected with a larger number of seats in the House. Although the Liberals lost a small share of the popular vote, they were able to win more seats, falling just short of a majority. Overview The Liberals campaigned on their record of having kept the promises made in the 1963 campaign, which included job creation, lowering income taxes, higher wages, higher family allowances and student loans. Douglas Harkness
Douglas Scott Harkness, (March 29, 1903 – May 2, 1999) was a Canadian politician. Early life and military service He was born in Toronto, Ontario, and moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1929. He graduated from the University of Alberta, then farmed and taught school in the vicinity of Red Deer. He taught at Crescent Heights High School until 1939. He fought during the Second World War from 1940 to 1945, serving in the European theater of war. He was posted to Great Britain, Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe. In 1943 was awarded the George Medal "in recognition of conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner". Harkness was aboard a troopship when it was torpedoed transiting from Sicily to England. Harkness was awarded the medal for his organization of the abandonment of the ship.
