Adoration Of The Shepherds With Saints Nazarius And Celsus
''Adoration of the Shepherds with Saints Nazarius and Celsus'' is a 1540 oil on canvas painting by Moretto da Brescia in the church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia. As its title suggests, it shows Nazarius and Celsus, patron saints of the church. It is one of the painter's most-discussed works and shows his gradual but decisive move towards Mannerism. It was only securely attributed to him from the late 20th century onwards. It includes several unusual compositional elements influenced by other artists. A restoration in 1987 also showed a huge number of pentimenti and corrections. It is first recorded in 1630 by Bernardino Faino as an altarpiece in the Averoldi Chapel in Santi Nazaro e Celso - he attributed it to Luca Mombello, who had also painted the frescoes on the chapel walls. Alessandro Bonvicino (also Buonvicino) (possibly 22 December 1554), more commonly known as Moretto, or in Italian Il Moretto da Brescia (the Moor of Brescia), was an Italian Renaissance painter from Brescia, where he also mostly worked. His dated works span the period from 1524 to 1554, but he was already described as a master in 1516. He was mainly a painter of altarpieces that tend towards sedateness, mostly for churches in and around Brescia, but also in Bergamo, Milan, Verona, and Asola; many remain in the churches they were painted for. Santi Nazaro E Celso, Brescia
The church of Santi Nazaro e Celso is located on Corso Giacomo Matteotti, at the intersection with via Fratelli Bronzetti, in Brescia, Lombardy, Italy. The church contains the '' Averoldi Polyptych'' (1522), a masterwork of Titian. History Originally a church was found at approximately the same site in 1222, in an area that was soon enclosed by enlarged city walls. A major reconstruction began in 1746, by designs of abate Zinelli, and completed in 1781, leading to the statue-topped neoclassical facade we see today. It was interrupted in 1769 by an accidental explosion of a powder magazine at nearby Porta Nazaro. Reconstruction finally ceased and worship was resumed in 1780. Nazarius And Celsus
Nazarius and Celsus ( it, San Nazaro e San Celso) were two martyrs of whom little is known beyond the discovery of their bodies by Ambrose of Milan. According to Paulinus the Deacon's ''Vita Ambrosii'', Ambrose, at some time within the last three years of his life, after the death of the Emperor Theodosius (d. 395), discovered in a garden outside the walls of Milan the body of Nazarius, with severed head. Nazarius's blood was reportedly still liquid and red when his body was exhumed by Ambrose. Ambrose had it carried to the Basilica of the Apostles. In the same garden Ambrose likewise discovered the body of Celsus, which he had transported to the same place. The ''Catholic Encyclopedia'' states: "Obviously a tradition regarding these martyrs was extant in the Christian community of Milan which led to the finding of the two bodies."

A pentimento (plural pentimenti), in painting, is "the presence or emergence of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over". Herri met de Bles, also known as Henri Blès, Herri de Dinant, Herry de Patinir, and ''il Civetta'' (c. 1490 – after 1566), was a Flemish Northern Renaissance and Mannerist landscape painter, native of Bouvignes or Dinant (both in present-day Belgium). The name ''Herri met de Bles'' translates literally from Dutch as ''Herri with the blaze'' and was reportedly given him because of his characteristic white forelock.
