Adolf Østbye
Adolf Østbye (February 1868 – September 5, 1907) was a revue artist and barber who became the first Norwegian recording artist. The earliest playable Norwegian phonograph cylinder dates from 1889. During the years 1889–1904, Østbye made a series of cylinders, announced "Østbye Record". Several of these are made with cooperation with the Norwegian Pathé manager, William Farre. The record was "Parodi paa Terje Vigen". (Actually, Edvard Grieg 1843–1907, was the first Norwegian to make gramophone records, he did nine records in Paris during the spring 1903.) Phonograph Cylinder
Phonograph cylinders are the earliest commercial medium for recording and reproducing sound. Commonly known simply as "records" in their era of greatest popularity (c. 1896–1916), these hollow cylindrical objects have an audio recording engraved on the outside surface, which can be reproduced when they are played on a mechanical cylinder phonograph. In the 1910s, the competing disc record system triumphed in the marketplace to become the dominant commercial audio medium. Early development In December 1877, Thomas Edison and his team invented the phonograph using a thin sheet of tin foil wrapped around a hand-cranked, grooved metal cylinder. Tin foil was not a practical recording medium for either commercial or artistic purposes, and the crude hand-cranked phonograph was only marketed as a novelty, to little or no profit. William Farre
William Andrew Farre (born William Johnsen, 1 August 1874 – April 5, 1950) was a Norwegian musician, conductor, and composer. Farre was born in Trondheim. He directed a Salvation Army orchestra in Stavanger in 1895 and also played in a Salvation Army brass band. In 1901 he established the Møllergata School Band, the oldest school band in Norway. Later he established the company "William Johnsens musikkforlag og utsalg" (William Johnsen Music Publishing and Sales) in Kristiania (now Oslo). The company printed sheet music for school bands. Farre himself composed some of the music, including the march "Guttene kommer" (The Boys are Coming). His company planned to make sound recordings of over 100 Norwegian dialects, but went bankrupt after recording four dialects. Farre adopted the surname ''Farre'' in 1915. Edvard Grieg
Edvard Hagerup Grieg ( , ; 15 June 18434 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the foremost Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions brought the music of Norway to fame, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius did in Finland and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Grieg is the most celebrated person from the city of Bergen, with numerous statues which depict his image, and many cultural entities named after him: the city's largest concert building (Grieg Hall), its most advanced music school (Grieg Academy) and its professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor). The Gramophone Company Limited (The Gramophone Co. Ltd.), based in the United Kingdom and founded by Emil Berliner, was one of the early recording companies, the parent organisation for the ''His Master's Voice (HMV)'' label, and the European affiliate of the American Victor Talking Machine Company. Although the company merged with the Columbia Graphophone Company in 1931 to form Electric and Musical Industries Limited (EMI), its name "The Gramophone Company Limited" continued in the UK into the 1970s. History The Gramophone Company was founded in April 1898 by William Barry Owen and Edmund Trevor Lloyd Wynne Williams, commissioned by Emil Berliner, in London, England. Holmsbu
Holmsbu is a small village located in Viken, Norway. Holmsbu is situated in the municipality of Asker on the west side of the peninsula of Hurumlandet on Drammensfjord. The village had 309 residents as of 1 January 2014. The seaport village was granted city status (''ladested'') in 1847 and lost its status in 1964. Old wooden buildings along the waterfront are largely preserved. The village has attracted both artists and tourists. Holmsbu Bad is a hotel dating back to 1880. Oslo
