Adamasta Rock
Adamasta Rock () is an uninhabited undersea rock in Hong Kong, in the centre of the busy Adamasta Channel between the Chi Ma Wan Peninsula of Lantau Island and Cheung Chau island, in Hong Kong. It falls within the Islands District. The rock is submerged at high water and presents a significant shipping hazard due to its location in the middle of the Adamasta shipping channel. Adamasta Channel
The Adamasta Channel is a narrow passage between the Chi Ma Wan Peninsula of Lantau Island and Cheung Chau island in Hong Kong. It is one of the few passages in Hong Kong waters with a significant hazard, the Adamasta Rock, in the middle; however, the rock is well marked with a fixed light, and port- and starboard-hand buoys on either side. The channel experiences heavy traffic at all hours, being the principal route for the frequent fast ferry services between Hong Kong and Kowloon, and Macau, and also several outlying island ferry services. Chi Ma Wan Peninsula
Chi Ma Wan () is a bay on southeastern Lantau Island, New Territories, Hong Kong. Chi Ma Wan Peninsula () is where Chi Ma Wan, as well as Cheung Sha Wan, Tai Long Wan, Yi Long Wan and Mong Tung Wan are located. The Peninsula is located within the boundaries of Lantau South Country Park. Correctional institutions The Chi Ma Wan Correctional Institution is near Cheung Sha Wan on the peninsula. It was originally picked out by the Hong Kong Colonial Government as a site to house Russian refugees but in the end they decided not to build it and focussed on a prison instead. Established in 1956, it was the first open prison in Hong Kong. It is not currently in use. Lantau Island (also Lantao Island, Lan Tao) is the largest island in Hong Kong, located West of Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula, and is part of the New Territories. Cheung Chau
Cheung Chau (lit. "Long Island") is an island southwest of Hong Kong Island. It is nicknamed the 'dumbbell island (啞鈴島)' due to its shape. It has been inhabited for longer than most other places in Hong Kong, and had a population of 22,740 . Administratively, it is part of the Islands District. Geography Geographically the island is formed from two mostly granite masses joined by a tombolo. With an area of , the island is therefore "long", hence the name as translated from Cantonese is "Long Island". Thus, it is redundant to say "Cheung Chau Island". Islands District
The Islands District is one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong. It is part of the New Territories. It had a population of 170,900 in 2018. Hong Kong consists of a peninsula and 263 islands. The Islands District consists of some twenty large and small islands which lie to the south and southwest of Hong Kong. Notable areas that are part of the Islands District include Chek Lap Kok, the reclaimed island on which Hong Kong International Airport is located, Tung Chung on northern Lantau near the airport, and Discovery Bay, a large private residential area on eastern Lantau. The Marine Department of the Hong Kong Government is responsible for maintaining safety and environmental protection of the harbour (Port of Hong Kong), ships registered/foreign ships in Hong Kong and monitor shipping traffic in Hong Kong Waters, search and rescue operations for large waters of the South China Sea. An Isolated Danger Mark, as defined by the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities, is a sea mark used in maritime pilotage to indicate a hazard to shipping such as a partially submerged rock.
