Richard Thompson (musician)
Richard Thompson (born 3 April 1949) is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Thompson first gained prominence in the late 1960s as the lead guitarist and songwriter for the folk rock group Fairport Convention, which he had co-founded in 1967. After departing the group in 1971, Thompson released his debut solo album ''Henry the Human Fly'' in 1972. The next year, he formed a duo with his then-wife Linda Thompson, which produced six albums, including the critically acclaimed '' I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight'' (1974) and ''Shoot Out the Lights'' (1982). After the dissolution of the duo, Thompson revived his solo career with the release of '' Hand of Kindness'' in 1983. He has released a total of eighteen solo studio albums. ''Rumor and Sigh'' is the seventh solo album by British singer/songwriter Richard Thompson, released in 1991 on the Capitol label. The album was a commercial success for Thompson, and featured his biggest American hit single "I Feel So Good", as well as the fan favourite " 1952 Vincent Black Lightning”. The album earned Thompson a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1992. It was voted number 665 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's ''All Time Top 1000 Albums'' (2000). ''What We Did on Our Holidays'' (released as ''Fairport Convention'' in the United States) is the second album by British band Fairport Convention, released in 1969. It was their first album to feature singer-songwriter Sandy Denny. The album also showed a move towards the folk rock for which the band became noted, including tracks later to become perennial favourites such as "Fotheringay" and the song traditionally used to close live concerts, "Meet on the Ledge". "Meet on the Ledge" is a song written by British singer-songwriter Richard Thompson and recorded by British folk rock band Fairport Convention in 1968 on Island Records. It was their second single. Background The song was taken from the album '' What We Did on Our Holidays''. The band had performed the song on the 1969 launch of ''From the Roundhouse'', a short-lived BBC television youth and arts programme about the London "underground scene". The vocals were performed by Sandy Denny and Iain Matthews. The song's title came from a large, low-hanging tree limb on which Richard Thompson used to play as a child, and which he and his friends had dubbed "The Ledge". Reception Thompson has acknowledged that some people interpret "the ledge" as some sort of code for the afterlife and that it is popular at funerals. __NOTOC__ ''Hand of Kindness'' is the third solo album by singer/songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson. It was recorded and released in 1983, after a ten year collaboration with former wife Linda Thompson. It is his first album of original solo material since ''Henry the Human Fly'' (1972). After the "Tour From Hell" to promote ''Shoot Out the Lights'' (recorded with his wife), Richard resumed his own career as a recording and performing artist. Several songs feature the twin saxophones of Pete Zorn and Pete Thomas, and for about 18 months after the release of ''Hand of Kindness'', Thompson toured with his "Big Band" that featured the two sax players prominently. The album opens with " Tear-Stained Letter", later a country music top ten hit for Jo-El Sonnier. Thompson's ex-wife Linda cited album track "How I Wanted To" as her favorite of her former husband's songs.
