Acher
The Acher is a 53.6-kilometre-long river and right-hand tributary of the Rhine in the county of Ortenau, in the south German state of Baden-Württemberg. It flows in an northwesterly direction from the Black Forest to the Rhine, between the two rivers Rench to the south and the Oos to the north. Geography The source region of the Acher lies on the northeastern mountainside of the Vogelskopf () an area divided into cirques formed by the ice age. The spring named the ''Acherquelle'' rises at a height of in the area of the ''Ruhesteinloch'', which is named after the Ruhestein Saddle to the east and is located between the Vogelskopf and Seekopf (). The Acher initially flows northwards, descending steeply. Achern
Achern (; gsw, label= Low Alemannic, Achre) is a town in Western Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is located approximately 18 km southwest of Baden-Baden and 19 km northeast of Offenburg. Achern is the fourth largest town in the district of Ortenau (Ortenaukreis), after Offenburg, Lahr / Black Forest and Kehl. As subsequent to the district reform in the 1970s the population passed the 20,000 mark, Achern requested to be awarded the status of ''Große Kreisstadt''. The status was granted by the State government effective January 1, 1974. Achern collaborates with the communities of Lauf, Sasbach, and Sasbachwalden in administrative matters. Rench
The Rench is a right-hand tributary of the Rhine in the Ortenau ( Central Baden, Germany). It rises on the southern edge of the Northern Black Forest at Kniebis near Bad Griesbach im Schwarzwald. The source farthest from the mouth is that of the ''Schöngrundbächle'' which rises at a height of around in the parish of Zuflucht near the old youth hostel. After flowing through its steep mountainside ''klinge'' it is joined by other streams to form, first, the Old (''Alter''), then the Wild Rench (''Wilder Rench''), which first becomes the Rench below Bad Griesbach. The Rench runs in a prominent southerly arc through the Central Black Forest and crosses the hilly region of Ortenau with its orchards and vineyards before breaking out into the Rhine Plain. Sandbach (Acher)
The Sandbach is a river in the districts of Rastatt and Baden-Baden in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. From its source it runs, initially as the Bühlot, northwestwards within the Northern Black Forest, then out onto the Upper Rhine Plain heading north-northeast at first before swinging northwest again to its confluence. Its mouth lies 29.1 kilometres below its source near Iffezheim, where it discharges from the right into the lower reaches of the Acher which are known as the ''Altrheinzug'' ("Old Rhine Course"). Black Forest
The Black Forest (german: Schwarzwald ) is a large forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwest Germany, bounded by the Rhine Valley to the west and south and close to the borders with France and Switzerland. Kappelrodeck
Kappelrodeck ( gsw, label= Low Alemannic, Kabbl) is a town in Western Baden-Württemberg, Germany and belongs to the district of Ortenau. It is located at the western hillslope of the Black Forest in the valley Achertal. It is about 20 kilometres to the north of Offenburg and about 20 kilometres to the south of Baden-Baden. Mummelsee
The Mummelsee is a 17-metre-deep lake at the western mountainside of the Hornisgrinde in the Northern Black Forest of Germany. It is very popular with tourists travelling along the Black Forest High Road. According to legends, the lake is inhabited by a Nix and the King of the Mummelsee. With a circumference of 800 meters, the Mummelsee is the largest of the seven cirque lakes in the Black Forest, the deepest at 17 m deep and the highest at 1036 m. Geography The Mummelsee has a circumference of approximately 800 m (2,625 ft) and is surrounded by steep and forested mountain slopes on its northern, western and eastern sides. Ruhestein
The Ruhestein is a mountain pass () between the Murg valley and the Acher valley in the Northern Black Forest. The border between the old Grand Duchy of Baden and the Kingdom of Württemberg ran over the pass, a large sandstone erratic marking the former border. Today it forms the provincial, county and municipal boundary between Baiersbronn ( county of Freudenstadt) and Seebach ( Ortenaukreis). The Ruhestein is a rest area for all those who want to cross the mountain ridge from one valley to the other. Ruhestein lies on the Black Forest High Road, which links Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt.
