Novosibirsk (, also ; rus, Новосиби́рск, p=nəvəsʲɪˈbʲirsk, a=ru-Новосибирск.ogg) is the largest city and administrative centre of Novosibirsk Oblast and Siberian Federal District in Russia. Akademgorodok ( rus, Академгородок, p=ɐkəˌdʲemɡərɐˈdok, "Academic Town") is a part of the Sovetsky District of the city of Novosibirsk, Russia, located south of the city center and about west of Koltsovo. Tereshkova Street (russian: Улица Терешковой) is a street in Akademgorodok of Novosibirsk, Russia. History The street was previously called Obvodnaya Street or Romantikov Street. March 10, 1959, the first tenants moved into the three-story house on the street. In September 1959, school, kindergarten and dormitory were built on the street. Scientist Viktor Sharapov recalled that in 1960–1962 the main scientific settlement of Akademgorodok was concentrated in 3 or 4 houses on this street. In 1964, the street was named after Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to have flown in space. Valentin Afanasyevich Koptyug (russian: Валентин Афанасьевич Коптюг; June 9, 1931 – January 10, 1997) was a Soviet Belarusian scientist, specializing in physical and organic chemistry. Biography Valentin Koptyug was born in 1931 in Yukhnov in the family of Afanasy Koptyug, who was director of the local communication department, and Nadezhda Koptyug, who was a telegrapher. When young Koptyug was studying in school, his family had to evacuate because of Great Patriotic War. In 1949 he finished school in Samarkand and graduated from D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia in 1954 in Moscow. In 1957, Koptyg completed postgraduate studies at this institution. He worked at the Mendeleev University from 1957 to 1959. In 1959 the scientist began his career at the Institute of Organic Chemistry in Novosibirsk, where he was the head of the laboratory from 1959 to 1987, and then the director of this institute (1987–1997). The Sobolev Institute of Mathematics (SIM) was founded in 1957 by Sergey Sobolev. It is located in Akademgorodok and it constitutes part of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Sergey S. Goncharov is the director. The institute was founded as part of a broader project developed by Sobolev, Mikhail Lavrentyev and Sergey Khristianovich which received official support on 18 May 1957. The domesticated silver fox (''Vulpes vulpes'' forma ''amicus'') is a form of the silver fox that has been to some extent domesticated under laboratory conditions. The silver fox is a melanistic form of the wild red fox. Domesticated silver foxes are the result of an experiment designed to demonstrate the power of selective breeding to transform species, as described by Charles Darwin in ''On the Origin of Species''. The experiment at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Siberia explored whether selection for behaviour rather than morphology may have been the process that had produced dogs from wolves, by recording the changes in foxes when in each generation only the most tame foxes were allowed to breed.
