''Absolute Classic Masterpieces Volume II'' is the fourth compilation album by English alternative rock band Felt, released in 1993. It collects tracks from the band's singles and albums recorded for Creation Records between 1986 and 1988. The album comprises two CDs; the first contains single tracks only and the second contains album tracks. Tracks 3 and 7 of the first disc are instrumental, as are tracks 1-4 and 13-16 of the second disc. Felt (band)
Felt were an English jangle pop band, formed in 1979 in Water Orton, England, and led by the mononymous Lawrence. They were active for ten years through the 1980s, releasing ten singles and ten albums. The band's name was inspired by Tom Verlaine's emphasis of the word "felt" in the Television song "Venus". Felt have been cited as an influence by Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch and Tim Burgess of the Charlatans, as well as by alternative rock bands Manic Street Preachers, Girls, and the Tyde. History Formation Lawrence founded the band in 1979 with the release of the single "Index", a self-published solo recording. Rose McDowell
Rose McDowall (née Porter; born 21 October 1959) is a Scottish musician, forming Strawberry Switchblade with Jill Bryson in 1981. History McDowall was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1959. Her first venture into music was in the Poems, an art- punk trio formed in 1978 with her then-husband Drew McDowall. She then formed Strawberry Switchblade in 1981 with Jill Bryson. After signing with Warner Bros. Records, they enjoyed chart success with their single " Since Yesterday" in 1984; however, later singles and an album did not sell as well as expected. This and internal problems led to an acrimonious split in 1986. Martin Duffy (musician)
Martin Bernard Duffy (18 May 1967 – 18 December 2022) was an English musician who originally played keyboards with Felt (band), Felt and most famously with Primal Scream. Career Duffy was born in Birmingham and grew up in Rednal in the south of the city, attending St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, Birmingham, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School in King's Norton, and growing up listening to punk rock, as well as Two-tone (music genre), two-tone, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Duffy joined the indie rock band Felt (band), Felt as keyboard player in 1985. Felt frontman Lawrence (musician), Lawrence later recalled "I put up notices in Virgin Megastores, Virgin in Birmingham advertising for a guitarist saying 'Do You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star?' Lawrence (musician)
Lawrence Hayward (born 12 August 1961) is an English singer, songwriter and guitarist. He is known as the frontman in the English indie pop bands Felt, Denim, and Mozart Estate (formerly Go-Kart Mozart). He has never used his surname in credits or press for his work. Music career Felt Felt released ten albums in the 1980s, and Lawrence was the only constant member of the band from its inception in 1979 to its dissolution in 1989, though he doesn't appear at all on the band's penultimate album, '' Train Above The City'', despite being present at the recording sessions. During his time in the band, he served as lyricist and co-songwriter, together with then-lead guitarist Maurice Deebank, who left the band in 1985. ''Select'' was a United Kingdom music magazine of the 1990s. It was known for covering indie rock, but featured a wide array of music. Launched in July 1990, its first cover star was Prince. After EMAP Metro bought ''Select'', they revamped its image, and it became known for its coverage of Britpop, a term coined in the magazine by Stuart Maconie. Its 1993 "Yanks Go Home" edition, featuring The Auteurs, Denim, Saint Etienne, Pulp and Suede's Brett Anderson on the cover in front of a Union Flag, was an important impetus in defining the movement's opposition to American genres such as grunge. Later, John Harris stepped down as editor, and was replaced by former ''Mixmag'' editor Alexis Petridis. Indie Pop
Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, Independent record label, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. It collects tracks from the band's singles and albums recorded for Cherry Red between 1981 and 1985, with two exceptions: "Dance of Deliverance" from guitarist Maurice Deebank's album, ''Inner Thought Zone''; and "Index", a single recorded and released by leader Lawrence before the band formed properly. Tracks 4, 9, 11, 15 and 18 are instrumental. The liner notes for the album feature an interview with Felt's original bass player, Nick Gilbert, reflecting on the formation of the band. Robin Guthrie
Robin Andrew Guthrie (born 4 January 1962) is a Scottish musician, songwriter, composer, record producer and audio engineer, best known as the co-founder of the alternative rock band Cocteau Twins. During his career Guthrie has performed guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums and other musical instruments, in addition to programming, sampling and sound processing. Career Following the break-up of Cocteau Twins in 1998, Guthrie released his first solo record, ''Imperial'', in 2003 on Bella Union Records. Guthrie's next release, which was co-written with Harold Budd, was the film score for Gregg Araki's ''Mysterious Skin''. The soundtrack was released in May 2005 by Commotion and consists of 15 complete songs based on the short pieces used in the film.
