Abitibi—Témiscamingue is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2004. The area was also represented by the electoral district of Témiscamingue from 1968 until 2004. Geography The district includes the Regional County Municipalities of Témiscamingue, Abitibi, Abitibi-Ouest, the city of Rouyn-Noranda and a small section of south western Jamésie territory. The neighbouring ridings are Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou, Pontiac, Renfrew—Nipissing—Pembroke, Nipissing—Timiskaming, and Timmins—James Bay. History Témiscamingue was created in 1968 from parts of Pontiac—Témiscamingue and Villeneuve. Duparquet
Duparquet () is a ''ville'' in northwestern Quebec, Canada in the MRC d'Abitibi-Ouest. It covers and had a population of 716 as of the Canada 2021 Census. History In 1912, a rich gold vein was discovered near Lake Duparquet by a prospector named Beattie. He set up the Beattie Gold Mine company that began operation in 1933. That same year, the new community forming at the mine was incorporated as Ville de Duparquet, named after the geographic township in which it is located. The township was named in 1916 in honour of Jean-Annet Chabreuil Du Parquet, a grenadier captain of the La Sarre Regiment, that was part of General Montcalm's army. After producing 1 million ounces of gold and killing at least 27 miners, including 4 in a landslide on 9 July 1946, the mine closed in 1956. But the owners of the mining rights are currently considering reopening it as an open-pit mine. Témiscaming
Témiscaming is a city located at the south end of Lac Témiscamingue on the upper Ottawa River in the Témiscamingue Regional County Municipality of western Quebec, Canada. Also nearby is Lake Kipawa. It is the administrative headquarters of the Algonquin Nation Wolf Lake First Nations band government. History The Ottawa River had long been used by Indigenous peoples, colonial explorers, coureurs des bois, and missionaries as transportation route through the region. Some of the notable travellers passing by Témiscaming were Radisson and des Groseilliers, Saint-Lusson, Charles le Moyne and Pierre Le Moyne, and Chevalier de Troyes. A small chapel had existed there for the trappers and fur traders en route to Ottawa. The area began to be developed circa 1850 when forestry companies began logging the land. Belleterre
Belleterre is a ''ville'' in northwestern Quebec, Canada, in the MRC de Témiscamingue. History In 1930, prospector William Logan discovered gold near Mud Lake (now called Lake Guillet). This led to the establishment of the Belleterre Gold Mines Company in 1935, and the formation of the Belleterre community at nearby Sables Lake to house the miners and their families. In 1942, the place was incorporated as a town and at its peak had some 2000 residents. But by 1957, the mine was depleted and closed. Villeneuve was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1949 to 1979. This riding was created in 1947 from parts of Pontiac riding. It consisted initially of: * the southwestern part of the county of Abitibi; and * parts of the county of Témiscamingue including the towns of Mercier, Noranda and Rouyn.
