Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association
Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association (ASRA) was founded in 1960 by Robert Newton and Bryan Steel. It thrives today on the banks of the River Dee, Aberdeen, in Scotland. The club is affiliated to Scottish Rowing. History ASRA has been very successful in National competitions since 1960 and has won medals at 3 major competitions in Britain. In 2007 ASRA was awarded a grant from the Big Lottery Fund which allowed ASRA to employ their first paid coach, purchase boats for beginners, ergometers for schools and a minibus and towing vehicle. ASRA is expanding and hoping to build an extension to the current boathouse which was constructed in 2001. This is due to the huge increase in members due to the success of the "Wet Start" and "Dry Start" schemes. ASRA is run by 3 trustees: Bryan Steel, Alan Lawrie and Ian Duncan. Torry
Torry is an area within the city of Aberdeen, Scotland. Torry’s origins People have been living in Torry since at least the 12th century. The place name first appears in written records in 1484 and was erected a Burgh of barony by Royal Charter from King James IV in 1495. The first bridge over the Dee linking Torry with Aberdeen was built in the 1520s and Torry’s first pub, ‘le Sandy Velle’, is recorded in 1535, serving travellers from Aberdeen. Over time development in the area became focussed what became known as ‘Old Torry’, a fishing community on the south bank of the River Dee, to the north of present day Sinclair Road. In 1842 the Harbour authorities built two 'leading lights' in Old Torry to guide ships safely into Aberdeen Harbour. They are still working today. Home International Regatta
The Home International Regatta is a rowing regatta held every year for the countries of the British Isles - England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Events are held for both men and women at junior (under 18) and senior levels, including Para-rowing events. The race has been held since 1962 and each country takes it in turns to host the event. Prior to moving to Cardiff Bay, Welsh Rowing hosted the event outside Wales on a number of occasions in both Strathclyde and Ghent. History At The News of the World sponsored regatta on the Serpentine Regatta in Hyde Park, a Home International or "Quadrangular" was held between 1962 and 1964. The sponsorship was dropped and the competition lapsed, but in 1966 however the competition was revived with a match in Monmouth in Wales. The National Schools Regatta
National Schools' Regatta is the largest rowing regatta for junior rowers in Great Britain. Held annually in May, the three day regatta offers events for junior rowers between the categories J14 and J18. History The regatta was first raced in 1947 as the "Colts and Third Eights Regatta", when Desmond Hill the master-in-charge of rowing at St Edward's School, Oxford, invited the third VIIIs of Shrewsbury School, Bedford School and Radley College to race against St. Edwards in Godstow. The event was repeated annually at a number of locations in the Thames Valley, and then later at Pangbourne, until in 1963 when it moved to the Child Beale Trust Estate. With the growth of the regatta and the addition of many more events for junior crews the regatta changed its name to "The National Schools' Regatta" in 1964. 2010 British Rowing Championships
The 2010 British Rowing Championships were the 39th edition of the National Championships, held from 16–18 July 2010 at the Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire. They were organised and sanctioned by British Rowing, and are open to British rowers. The 2010 regatta was notable by the very poor turn out by the country's top clubs, especially in the elite men's events. The men's coxed fours had only three entries, two of which withdrew before the final, leaving London Rowing Club to row over. The same crew also won the men's coxless fours, and the men's open eights which was a straight final, where London combined with four members of the clubs lightweight squad.
