Abercromby Square
Abercromby Square is a square in the University of Liverpool, England. It is bordered by Oxford Street to the north and Cambridge Street to the south. It is named after General Sir Ralph Abercromby, commander of the British Army in Egypt, who died of his wounds following the Battle of Alexandria in 1801. ''Abercromby'' (or ''Abercrombie'') was launched at Calcutta in 1795. She made one voyage from Bengal to England for the British East India Company. She wrecked in 1812. Career Captain John Gilmore sailed from Calcutta, passing Kedgeree on 1 February 1796. ''Abercromby'' reached Saint Helena on 23 April and Falmouth on 21 June, before arriving at Blackwall on 18 July Blackwall. She carried rice on behalf of the British government which was importing grain to address high prices for wheat in Britain following a poor harvest. ''Abercromby'' was admitted to the Registries of Great Britain on 26 August 1796. The bill for fitting out while in London, dated 1 October 1796, was £1091 4 s 8 d. ''Captain Abercromby'' is a children's TV show that was on BBC Two in 2002–2003. Its cast are puppets. Series overview Captain Abercromby was a puppet series about a boy named Abercromby, who is raised by his grandfather. After hearing the tale of how his Grandpa lost his watch, which was given to him by Abercromby's mother, he dreams that he is a captain of a seaship, the "Hope", and that he is on a mission to find the watch. They have a rival crew attempting to find buried treasure, run by Captain Jake in his ship "Thunderbottom", who mistakenly (but logically) believe that Abercromby is looking for buried treasure, so making the series a race between the two ships. Lord Abercromby
Alexander Abercromby, Lord Abercromby of Tullibody (1745–1795) was a Scottish advocate, judge and essayist. Life Abercromby was born in Tullibody House in Clackmannanshire on 15 October 1745, the fourth and youngest son of George Abercromby of Tullibody (1705-1800) and Mary Dundas. Two of his brothers entered the army; one of them became general Sir Ralph Abercromby. Alexander was the brother-in-law of Robert Bruce, Lord Kennet and James Edmonstone. Alexander studied law at the University of Edinburgh, where he seems to have been chiefly distinguished for his handsome person and engaging disposition. He was admitted a member of the Faculty of Advocates in 1766, and was soon afterwards (1770) appointed sheriff-depute of Clackmannanshire. However, personal residence was not required within the county served, and he continued the practice of his profession at the bar in Edinburgh.
