Abel Manta

	Abel Manta Abel Manta (12 October 1888 in Gouveia Municipality, Portugal, Gouveia – 9 August 1982 in Lisbon) was an architect, painter, designer, and Portuguese cartoonist. Between 1904 and 1916 attended the school of Fine Arts, completed the course in painting, having won the third Prize of the National Society of Fine Arts. In 1919 he went to Paris participating in the "Salon de la Société Nationale" among other galleries, having also attended the course of engraving with William Schlumberger. While there he met his wife, the Portuguese artist Clementina Carneiro de Moura. He made several trips to study in Europe. 	William Schlumberger William Schlumberger (1800 – April 1838) was a European chess master. He is known to have taught Pierre Charles Fournier de Saint-Amant to play chess and as the operator of The Turk, a chess-playing machine which was purported to be an automaton. It was Bavarian musician and showman Johann Nepomuk Mälzel who hired him to operate The Turk. Schlumberger acted as the Turk's director in Europe and in the United States until his death from yellow fever in 1838. 	Clementina Carneiro De Moura Clementina Carneiro de Moura (1898-1992) was a Portuguese teacher, modernist painter and promoter of traditional arts. Early life Maria Clementina Vilas Boas Carneiro de Moura was born in Lisbon, Portugal on 25 September 1898, the daughter of João Lopes Carneiro de Moura and Elvira Vilas Boas. She completed a painting course at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts in 1920, where she was a student of the Portuguese realist painter Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro and colleague of the modernist painter Sarah Affonso. That same year she visited Paris, where she first met the Portuguese painter and cartoonist Abel Manta, who she would marry in 1927. Their son, João Abel Manta, would become particularly famous as a cartoonist during the dying days of the authoritarian '' Estado Novo'' regime.
