Abdool Razack Mohamed
Sir Abdool Razack Mohamed ( ur, عبد الرزاق محمد; 1 August 1906 – 8 May 1978) was an Indian-born former senior Mauritian Minister in the pre and post-independence cabinet of Mauritius. Early life and family Abdool Razack Mohamed was born in a wealthy mercantile Memon family in Calcutta, British India in 1906. His father Khan Bahadur Hadji Zackariah Mohamed was involved in the import and export trade of sugar. Abdool Razack migrated to Mauritius where he arrived on 16 November 1928 at the age of 22. He returned to Calcutta where he married Mariam before returning to Mauritius. Mariam gave birth to 4 children (Amina, Zackariah who died at the age of 3, Zohra and Salma. In 1932 Abdool Razack married a Creole named Ghislaine Ducasse whom he had met at dance lessons. Mauritian Creoles
Mauritian Creoles are the people on the island of Mauritius and in the wider overseas Mauritian diaspora who trace their roots to continental and Malagasy Africans who were brought to Mauritius under slavery from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. It can also refer to and include members of the island's mixed race or Métis community especially if they happen to be christian. In government records, creoles along with Franco-Mauritians form part of the broader group known as General Population (Mauritius), Population Générale. Nowadays, a significant proportion of Mauritian Creoles have African ancestry with varying amounts of Franco-Mauritian, French and Mauritians of Indian origin, Indian ancestry. Franco-Mauritian
Franco-Mauritians are an ethnic group from Mauritius who trace their ethnic ancestry to France and ethnic French people. Franco-Mauritians make up approximately 2% of the country's population. Origins The first French settlers arrived in Mauritius (then Isle de France) in 1722, after the previous attempts of settlement by the Dutch had failed, and the island had once again become abandoned. They lived and prospered on the island, ruling it until the British invasion of 1810. The French by now strongly identified with the island, and the terms of capitulation allowed the settlers to live on as a distinct Francophone ethnic group for the next 158 years under British rule before Mauritius attained independence. Renganaden Seeneevassen (11 April 1910 – 18 June 1958) was a Mauritian politician and government minister. Early life Seeneevassen was born in Port Louis, Mauritius at a house located at the corner of Bourbon Street and Léoville L'Homme Street. Both his father and mother had migrated to Mauritius from India. In 1915 he attended the subsidised school ''L’église de l’Angleterre'' located at Rue Arsenal. Then he attended the Central Boys government school located at Rue La Paix, and the Sunnee Surtee school at Rémy Ollier Road. In 1921, Seeneevassen started his secondary education at Royal College Curepipe and 8 years later he completed his Higher School Certificate (HSC), coming out as the 4th best student in Mauritius in 1929. Guy Rozemont
Guy Rozemont (1915–1956) was a Mauritian trade unionist and the third leader of the Mauritius Labour Party. He fought for workers' rights and voiced against the injustice done against them. He played a crucial role in shaping the government, political culture and foreign policy of modern Mauritius.
