Abbey Of San Mercuriale, Forlì
The Basilica Abbey of San Mercuriale is the main religious building in Forlì, in Romagna (northern Italy); the rather smaller cathedral was largely destroyed by fire in the 19th century. History and overview A first church was built here in the 4th century, dedicated to St. Stephen. It was destroyed by a fire in 1173. The dedication to Saint Mercurialis, the local martyr and patron, had appeared in the 9th century. In 1176 the edifice was assigned to the Vallumbrosan Order. The current edifice was finished in 1180 in Lombard-Romanesque style, along with the famous bell tower. The latter, with its height of 75 m, is one of the tallest in Italy. In the 13th century it was considered one of the marvels of the Kingdom of Italy. The abbey, which once was located outside the ancient Roman city, was included in a new line of walls in that period. Ferrara Cathedral
Ferrara Cathedral ( it, Basilica Cattedrale di San Giorgio, ''Duomo di Ferrara'') is a Roman Catholic cathedral and minor basilica in Ferrara, Northern Italy. Dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint of the city, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Ferrara and the largest religious building in the city. The cathedral stands in the city centre, not far from the Palazzo Comunale and the famous Castello Estense and is connected to the Archbishop's Palace by a covered passage. History Construction of the present building began in the 12th century, when the city was being extended on the left bank of the ''Po di Volano'', a long right branch of Po River; the construction of the new cathedral started in 1135. Baldassarre Carrari The Elder
Baldassarre Carrari the Elder (il Vecchio) was an Italian painter who worked at Forlì about the year 1354. Biography He is supposed to be the author of a fragment of a series of paintings which once adorned the Santa Maria in Schiavonia church. That which remains is now in the gymnasium at Forlì, and represents the ''Adoration of the Magi'' and figures of Saints Peter, Jerome, Paul, Augustin, three figures, and two horses, "creations that do more honor to the school of Giotto in these parts than any assigned to the artists named by Vasari". He was a relative of Baldassarre Carrari the Younger. The position of Carrari between Guglielmo degli Organi and Melozzo da Forli in the Forlivese school of painting is unclear. Lodovico Cardi (21 September 1559 – 8 June 1613), also known as Cigoli, was an Italian painter and architect of the late Mannerist and early Baroque period, trained and active in his early career in Florence, and spending the last nine years of his life in Rome. Biography Lodovico Cardi was born at Villa Castelvecchio in Cigoli, Tuscany, whence the name by which he is commonly known. Initially, Cigoli trained in Florence under the fervid mannerist Alessandro Allori, and studied the works of Michelangelo, Correggio, Andrea del Sarto and Pontormo. Later, influenced by the most prominent of the " Counter-''Maniera''" painters, Santi di Tito, as well as by Barocci, Cigoli shed the shackles of mannerism and infused his later paintings with an expressionism often lacking from 16th-century Florentine painting. Domenico Passignano
Domenico Passignano (1559 – 17 May 1638), born Domenico Cresti or Crespi, was an Italian painter of a late-Renaissance or Counter-''Maniera'' (Counter-Mannerism) style that emerged in Florence towards the end of the 16th century. Biography Cresti was born in Passignano in Val di Pesa, Passignano, currently a ''frazione'' of Barberino Tavarnelle about 30 km south of Florence, and was educated by the local Vallombrosan monks. He started his works in the stylized Tuscan manner, working with Giovanni Battista Naldini and Girolamo Macchietti. After travelling from Rome to Venice (1581–1589), he came under the influence of Tintoretto's style. Antonio Tempesta
Antonio Tempesta, also called il Tempestino (1555 – 5 August 1630), was an Italian painter and engraver, whose art acted as a point of connection between Baroque Rome and the culture of Antwerp. Much of his work depicts major battles and historical figures. Life He was born and trained in Florence and painted in a variety of styles, influenced to some degree by "Counter-''Maniera''" or Counter-Mannerism. He enrolled in the Florentine Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in 1576. He was a pupil of Santi di Tito, then of the Flemish painter Joannes Stradanus. He was part of the large team of artists working under Giorgio Vasari on the interior decoration of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. His favourite subjects were battles, cavalcades, and processions.
