Abakan International Airport (russian: Международный Аэропорт Абакан, ) is an airport located in Abakan, Republic of Khakassia, Russia. The airport is located to the north of the city not far from the city limits. City bus and trolleybus connections are available. It is the only airport in the region (Khakassia and south of Krasnoyarsk Kray) suitable for all types of aircraft. History On 1 March 1993, the PI “Abakan Airport” was established as independent enterprise by standing out of Abakan Aviation Enterprise; the Public Property Management Committee in cooperation with the Transport Aviation Department and Council of Ministers of Republic of Khakassia adopted this decision. The Ilyushin Il-76 (russian: Илью́шин Ил-76; NATO reporting name: Candid) is a multi-purpose, fixed-wing, four-engine turbofan strategic airlifter designed by the Soviet Union's Ilyushin design bureau. It was first planned as a commercial freighter in 1967, as a replacement for the Antonov An-12. It was designed to deliver heavy machinery to remote, poorly served areas. Military versions of the Il-76 have been widely used in Europe, Asia and Africa, including use as an aerial refueling tanker or command center. The Il-76 has seen extensive service as a commercial freighter for ramp-delivered cargo, especially for outsized or heavy items unable to be otherwise carried. Aeroflot Flight 542
On 7 March 1965, an Aeroflot Li-2 operating as Aeroflot Flight 542 (Abakan to Kyzyl) crashed shortly after takeoff from Abakan. Approximately 40 minutes after departure, the aircraft banked left and dived into the mountains of the Krasnoyarsk Krai region of the USSR. All 31 passengers and crew died, making it the deadliest known accident involving the Li-2. Background The aircraft in question was an Li-2 (itself a Soviet license-built version of the DC-3) with the serial number 23442810, produced by the Tashkent Aviation Plant in 1952 and transferred to the Main Directorate of the Civil Air Fleet. On September 24, the airliner received the tail number USSR-L4971 and was sent to the 132nd (Tuva) squadron of the Krasnoyarsk Civil Air Fleet Directorate. The Lisunov Li-2 (NATO reporting name: Cab), originally designated PS-84, was a license-built Soviet-version of the Douglas DC-3. It was produced by Factory #84 in Khimki, Moscow-Khimki and, after evacuation in 1941, at Tashkent Aviation Production Association, TAPO in Tashkent. The project was directed by aeronautical engineer Boris Lisunov, Boris Pavlovich Lisunov. Design and development The Soviet Union received its first Douglas DC-2, DC-2 in 1935. A total of 18 DC-3s had been ordered on 11 April 1936, and the government of the USSR purchased 21 DC-3s for operation by Aeroflot before World War II. A production license was awarded to the government of the USSR on 15 July 1936. Lisunov spent two years at the Douglas Aircraft Company, between November 1936 and April 1939 translating the design. Chelyabinsk Airport
Chelyabinsk Airport is an airport in Russia located 18 km north of Chelyabinsk. It services large airliners and can park up to 51 aircraft. It also serves as a secondary hub for Ural Airlines and Yamal Airlines. History Passenger flights to Chelyabinsk were served by Chelyabinsk Shagol Airport from 1938 and until it was repurposed for military only use.
