Anathon Aall
Anathon August Fredrik Aall (15 August 1867 – 9 January 1943) was a Norwegian academic, philosopher and psychologist. Originally educated as a theologian, he became a professor of philosophy at University of Oslo. Background He was born at Nesseby in Finnmark, Norway. He was a son of vicar Niels Anton Aall (1833–1896) and his wife Mathilde Susanne Dahl (1842–1910). His grandfather, Hans Cato Aall (1807-1862), was a Member of Parliament and mayor of Hammerfest. He was also a great-great-great-grandson of Nicolai Benjamin Aall, and a great-great-grandnephew of Niels, Jørgen and Jacob Aall. He was the brother of jurist and Fascist politician Herman Harris Aall (1871-1957). His sister Marna Aall (1873–1948) was married to philosopher Kristian Birch-Reichenwald Aars from 1895 to 1910. Hans Aall
Hans Jacob Aall (20 September 1869, in Arendal – 6 November 1946, in Oslo) was a Norwegian librarian and museum director. He was born in Arendal to ship owner Diderik Maria Aall and Marie Elisabeth Herlofson. He was a great-grandson of Niels Aall, and nephew of Axel Nicolai Herlofson, and a member of the Aall family which originates in Denmark ( Aal Sogn) in the 1500s. He graduated with an ''examen philosophicum'' degree (roughly equal to a bachelor degree) in philosophy in 1890. He married Emma Lund in 1901, but she died already in 1908. They had no children. Aall was the founding director of the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, which was established in 1894, and chaired the museum for 52 years until his death in 1946. He was decorated Knight of the Order of St. Olav in 1909, and Commander in 1929. Jacob Aall
Jacob Aall (27 July 1773 – 4 August 1844) was a Norwegian politician, historian, landowner and government economist. He was born the son of Nicolai Benjamin Aall (1739-1798), who was a merchant in Porsgrunn, Norway and owner of Ulefos Manor. He was also the nephew of merchant Jacob Aall (1754-1826). Career In 1791, Aall began attending a school in Copenhagen, Denmark where he earned a degree in theology in 1795. After graduating, he returned to Norway where he tried working as a cleric, but he felt that his abilities were not well at use and decided to take up other studies. In 1796, he returned to Copenhagen, where he began studying natural science. In 1797, he journeyed to Germany, touring the scientific schools of Leipzig, Kiel and Göttingen. Niels Aall
Niels Aall (1 December 1769 – 23 October 1854) was a Norwegian estate owner, businessman and politician. Family Niels Aall was the son of lumber merchant Nicolai Benjamin Aall (1739–98) from Porsgrunn and his wife Amjørg Jørgensdatter Wesseltoft (1741-1815). He was the brother of Jacob and Jørgen Aall. Aall was married twice, first from 1794 to Mariane Møller until her death in 1796, then from 1804 to Christine Johanne Blom until his own death in 1854. Biography After education in France and England, Aall settled as a merchant in Porsgunn. From 1810 he was the county clerk in Skien and Porsgrunn, before being appointed to Christian Frederik's government, where he was minister of trade and customs. Nils Aall Barricelli (24 January 1912 – 27 January 1993) was a Norwegian-Italian mathematician. Barricelli's early computer-assisted experiments in symbiogenesis and evolution are considered pioneering in artificial life research. Barricelli, who was independently wealthy, held an unpaid residency at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey in 1953, 1954, and 1956. He later worked at the University of California, Los Angeles, at Vanderbilt University (until 1964), in the Department of Genetics of the University of Washington, Seattle (until 1968) and then at the Mathematics Institute of the University of Oslo. Jacob Bjerknes
Jacob Aall Bonnevie Bjerknes ( , ; 2 November 1897 – 7 July 1975) was a meteorologist. He is known for his key paper in which he pointed the dynamics of the polar front, mechanism for north-south heat transport and for which he was also awarded a doctorate from the University of Oslo. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, he was the son of the Norwegian meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes, one of the pioneers of modern weather forecasting. He helped develop the Norwegian cyclone model. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Oslo in 1924. Bjerknes was part of the team that made the first crossing of the Arctic in the airship Norge. During WWII, he helped the US with the planning of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings. He also helped gain an understanding of the weather phenomenon El Niño. Jacob Aall Bonnevie
Jacob Aall Bonnevie (31 December 1838 – 13 August 1904) was a Norwegian educator, school director and text book author. He served as a member of the Norwegian Parliament for the Conservative Party. Biography Bonnevie was born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Honoratus Bonnevie (1797–1848) and Sophie Augusta Baumann (1804–95). His father would later become mayor of the city. Bonnevie graduated in 1856, then studied science at the University of Christiania becoming cand.real. in 1863. After finishing his education, he started teaching at Christiania Cathedral School from 1862. In 1865, he transferred to Kristiansand Cathedral School. In 1872, at the age of 34, Bonnevie was appointed school superintendent of Trondheim school district, an office he held until 1894. Jakob Aall Ottesen Larsen (March 1, 1888 – September 2, 1974) was an American classical scholar. He was known principally for his research on the political status of Ancient Greece. Biography Jakob Aall Ottesen Larsen was born in Decorah, Iowa. He was the son of Peter Laurentius Larsen, founding president of Luther College, and his second wife Ingeborg Astrup (1846–1923) He received a BA from Luther College in 1908 and MA from Yale in 1911. In 1914, he earned a Rhodes scholarship. He studied at Oxford University from 1914 to 1920. In 1928, Larsen received his Ph.D. from Harvard. The University of Vermont awarded him the LL.D. in 1953, and Luther College presented him with his D.Litt. in 1961.
