Strawbs
Strawbs (or The Strawbs) are an English rock band founded in 1964 as the Strawberry Hill Boys. The band started out as a bluegrass group, but eventually moved on to other styles such as folk rock and progressive rock. They are best known for their hit "Part of the Union", which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart in February 1973, as well as for "Lay Down", a popular progressive rock hit from the same LP. Strawbs toured with Supertramp in their "Crime of the Century" tour, doing their own "Hero and Heroine" tour, which drew musical similarities and themes. History Early days The Strawbs formed in 1964 as the Strawberry Hill Boys while the founder members were at St Mary's Teacher Training College, Strawberry Hill, London. The name was shortened to 'The Strawbs' for a June 1967 concert in which they wanted to display the band name on stage. Their long-time leader and most active songwriter is guitarist and singer Dave Cousins (guitar, dulcimer, banjo, vocals) (born ...

Richard Hudson (musician)
Richard William Stafford Hudson (born 9 May 1948) is an English musician who played drums and sitar for the Strawbs. He later joined forces with bassist John Ford to form a duo, Hudson and Ford, in which he played guitar and sang. Career Richard Hudson was a member of Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, in which he played drums and sitar and sang. In 1970, he and band-mate John Ford joined Strawbs. Hudson and Ford began to co-write material which appeared to be aiming in a slightly different direction to the compositions of Strawbs' main writer, Dave Cousins. In 1973 after a 52-date tour to promote the album Bursting at the Seams, there were acrimonious exchanges (which both parties now regret). Hudson and Ford left to form Hudson Ford. Hudson at this point switched from playing drums to guitar and sang more lead vocals. The punk era sounded the death knell of many progressive rock acts, including Hudson Ford. Hudson, Ford and Terry Cassidy founded the mock punk group The Monks an ...

The Old Grey Whistle Test
''The Old Grey Whistle Test'' (sometimes abbreviated to ''Whistle Test'' or ''OGWT'') is a British television music show. The show was devised by BBC producer Rowan Ayers, commissioned by David Attenborough and aired on BBC2 from 1971 to 1988. It took over the BBC2 late-night slot from '' Disco 2'', which ran between September 1970 and July 1971, while continuing to feature non-chart music. The original producer, involved in an executive capacity throughout the show's entire history, was Michael Appleton. According to presenter Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys – doormen in grey suits. Any song the doormen could remember and whistle, having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test. On 23 February 2018, a one-off live three-hour special of ''The Old Grey Whistle Test'' was broadcast on BBC Four, h ...

Grace Darling (song)
"Grace Darling" is a song by English band Strawbs, featured on their 1975 album ''Ghosts''. Recording The track was recorded in the chapel of the Charterhouse School, which the members of the band Genesis had attended in the 1960s, and which Strawbs' producer at the time, Tom Allom, had also attended. According to Dave Cousins, the chapel's pipe organ was used, played by the Alastair Ross, choirmaster and organist of St Lawrence's Church, West Wycombe; the band's keyboardist, John Hawken, chose not play on the recording, as he was not used to the very noticeable delay that falls between the pressing of a key on a pipe organ and the sounding of the corresponding note.''Ghosts'' CD booklet, A&M 540 937-2 (1998) During the recording of the album, Cousins fell ill and spent some time in hospital, returning to the studio after a lumbar puncture to record his vocals lying on the studio floor. Lyrical and musical content The title derives from the refrain "You are my saving ...

In addition, they had twelve albums enter the US ''Billboard'' 200. They are best known for tracks such as "I'm Going Home", "Hear Me Calling", "I'd Love to Change the World" and "Love Like a Man". Shine On Silver Sun
"Shine on Silver Sun" is a song by English band Strawbs featured on their 1974 album ''Hero and Heroine''. It is written by Dave Cousins and was intended as a "come-back" single after the post-"Part of the Union" band split. The single was a minor success peaking at number 34 in the UK Singles Chart. B-Side The B-side track "And Wherefore" is a band composition, not released on any studio album. It forms the second part of the composite song "Why and Wherefore" which appears on the compilation/rarities album '' Halcyon Days''. Part Of The Union
"Part of the Union" is a song by English band Strawbs, featured on their 1973 album '' Bursting at the Seams'' and was the band's most successful single, peaking at No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart. It also reached No. 10 in the Irish Singles Chart. Background The song was included on the album '' Bursting at the Seams'' but is not considered typical of the songs on that album. Indeed, the track was originally recorded without a contribution by band leader Dave Cousins and was to be released under the name of "The Brothers". It demonstrates the different, more commercial direction the writing partnership of Richard Hudson and John Ford was taking within the band. The song (especially its chorus "You don't get me I'm part of the Union") quickly became popular as an unofficial anthem of the trade union movement. Subsequently, the Strawbs have confirmed that the song was written with genuine celebratory intent, in support of the unions. The song resurfaced on the UK television adve ...

Here It Comes (song)
"Here It Comes" is a song by the English band Strawbs. It did not appear on any of their studio albums, but it was included on two compilation albums: '' Strawbs by Choice'' and '' Halcyon Days''. Written by bandleader Dave Cousins, "Here It Comes" shows definite pop influences and a more commercial view to song-writing, a trait that would extend to the next single, "Lay Down". B-Side The B-side track "Tomorrow" is taken from the ''Grave New World'' album and is a band composition, although the main lyrical idea is Dave Cousins's and stems from the feelings Cousins had at the decision taken by Rick Wakeman to leave the band at the end of recording the previous album '' From the Witchwood''. Personnel *Dave Cousins – lead vocals, acoustic guitar * Tony Hooper – backing vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion *John Ford – backing vocals, bass guitar * Richard Hudson – backing vocals, drums, percussion *Blue Weaver – keyboards Keyboard may refer to: Text input * Keyb ...

New World (Strawbs Song)
"New World" is a song by English band Strawbs written by Dave Cousins. The track first appeared on the ''Grave New World'' album. Lyrical and musical content The song is very much a companion piece of "The Hangman and the Papist" from the previous album '' From the Witchwood''. It tells of conflict and divided families and, like the earlier song, was prompted by the troubles in Northern Ireland. This is perhaps the first song from the band that could be described as progressive in instrumentation and arrangement, in particular the prominent mellotron brass and strings. Release history The song was released as a single in Japan instead of "Benedictus", which was relegated to the B-side. Personnel *Dave Cousins – vocals, acoustic guitar * Tony Hooper – acoustic guitar *Blue Weaver – Mellotron *John Ford – bass guitar The bass guitar, electric bass or simply bass (), is the lowest-pitched member of the string family. It is a plucked string instrument simi ...

Derek John "Blue" Weaver (born 11 March 1947) is a Welsh rock keyboardist, session musician, songwriter and record producer. Career Weaver's career as a musician began as a co-founding member of 1960s Welsh rock band Amen Corner and its successor Fair Weather. In 1971, Weaver joined Strawbs after keyboardist Rick Wakeman departed to join Yes, contributing notable keyboard and Mellotron parts on '' Grave New World'' and '' Bursting at the Seams'', the bands' most successful and critically-acclaimed albums. Weaver left Strawbs in 1973 and toured with Mott the Hoople on their US tour with supporting act Queen. The following year, he toured with Streetwalkers. In 1975, former Amen Corner bandmate Dennis Bryon, who had begun playing drums in The Bee Gees backing band the year before, suggested Weaver as a replacement keyboardist for the band following the departure of Geoff Westley. The three-piece backing band of Weaver, Bryon and the perennial Bee Gees sideman, Alan Kend ...
