If (band)
If was a British progressive rock and jazz rock band formed in 1969. In the period spanning 1970–75, they released eight studio-recorded albums and undertook 17 tours of Europe, the US and Canada. History The band was formed in 1969 by Dave Quincy, Dick Morrissey, and Terry Smith. They were managed by Lew Futterman, who was also the band's album producer. Signed by Chris Blackwell to Island Records in the UK and to Capitol Records in the US, their debut album, '' If'' (1970), entered the charts in both the States ('' Billboard'') and the UK. The second album, '' If 2'', was released the same year. They toured in Europe and the United States during the early 1970s, with two US tours during their first year, performing at Newport Jazz Festival, Reading Festival, and the Fillmore East (10 November 1970). Dave Quincy
David Quincy (born 13 September 1939, Battle, Sussex), better known as Dave Quincy (and also billed as Dave Quincey), is an English saxophonist and composer who was a founder-member of British jazz-rock bands If and Zzebra. Before joining If, Quincy had played in the early 1960s with Jet Harris, and with Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds from August 1965 to February 1967 where he played with Dave Greenslade (who would also later briefly join If when their first line-up split, before going on to form his own group). Quincy then recorded two albums with Manfred Mann Chapter Three before recording for JJ Jackson, where he met up with Dick Morrissey and Terry Smith, with whom he would form If. When If broke up, Quincy went on to become a founder-member of Zzebra, with Terry Smith. Repertoire Records now release all the If recordings in their catalogue, and in 2014 released ''Groovicity'', a recent recording by a quartet led by Quincy. Dave Greenslade
David John Greenslade (born 18 January 1943) is an English composer and keyboard player. He has played with Colosseum from the beginning in 1968 until the farewell concert in 2015 and also from 1973 in his own band, Greenslade, and others including If and Chris Farlowe's Thunderbirds. Greenslade was born in Woking, Surrey, England, the son of orchestral arranger Arthur Greenslade. Among his works are ''Cactus Choir'', '' The Pentateuch of the Cosmogony'' (with art by Patrick Woodroffe) and ''From the Discworld''. Television work includes music for the BBC series ''Gangsters'' (1975–1978), ''Bird of Prey'' (1982–1984) and '' A Very Peculiar Practice'' (1986). After this he "virtually vanished from sight", becoming, as his friend Terry Pratchett proclaimed, "the man every TV producer in England would call when a new TV theme was needed". ''If'', often referred to as ''If 1'', is the eponymous debut album by the English Jazz rock band If. It was released in October 1970 on the Island Records label in the UK and Capitol Records in the US. The original artwork and the if logo, which was an award-winning design, were by CCS Advertising Associates. It was re-issued as a CD first in 1995 by an obscure label (OSA), then in 1997 by Island and finally in 2006 on Repertoire Records with two bonus tracks and liner notes by UK music critic Chris Welch. Chris Blackwell
Christopher Percy Gordon Blackwell (born 22 June 1937) is an English businessman and former record producer, and the founder of Island Records, which has been called "one of Britain's great independent labels". According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to which Blackwell was inducted in 2001, he is "the single person most responsible for turning the world on to reggae music." Variety describes him as "indisputably one of the greatest record executives in history". Having formed Island Records in Jamaica on 22 May 1959 when he was 22, Blackwell was among the first to record the Jamaican popular music that eventually became known as ska. Terry Smith (British Jazz Guitarist)
Terence Smith (born 20 May 1943) is a British jazz guitarist. Biography Twice winner of the Melody Maker Music Polls, Smith spent the early 1960s playing with the Tony Lee Trio, before becoming Scott Walker's musical director and accompanying The Walker Brothers on their Japan tour in 1968. Returning to the UK, he recorded a solo album, ''Fall Out'' (1968), which was produced by Scott Walker, and backed by UK jazz musicians of the day such as Kenny Wheeler, Les Condon, Ronnie Ross, Ronnie Stephenson, Gordon Beck, Ron Mathewson, Chris Karan, and Ray Warleigh. Smith went on to join the US soul singer J.J. Jackson's Greatest Little Soul Band in the Land, with whom he recorded two LPs: ''The Greatest Little Soul Band in the Land'' (1969) and '' J.J. Jazz Rock
Jazz fusion (also known as fusion and progressive jazz) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll. Jazz fusion arrangements vary in complexity. Some employ groove-based vamps fixed to a single key or a single chord with a simple, repeated melody. Others use elaborate chord progressions, unconventional time signatures, or melodies with counter-melodies. These arrangements, whether simple or complex, typically include improvised sections that can vary in length, much like in other forms of jazz. Geoff Whitehorn
Geoffrey Charles Whitehorn (born 29 August 1951, London, England) is a guitarist and singer-songwriter, who has played as a member of If, Crawler and Procol Harum. History In August 1973, Whitehorn joined the pioneering British jazz-rock band, If, in what was their third and final line-up, appearing on their last two albums, '' Not Just Another Bunch of Pretty Faces'' (1974) and '' Tea Break Over, Back on Your 'Eads'' (1975). During that period, he recorded his first solo album, ''Whitehorn'' (1974, Stateside), featuring fellow If members Dick Morrissey and Cliff Davies. Fiachra Trench
Fiachra Terence Wilbrah Trench (born 7 September 1941, in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish musician and composer from Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. Trench first studied Chemistry at Trinity College, Dublin, before moving on to the University of Georgia in 1963, and then the University of Cincinnati. From 1969 to 1991 he lived and worked in London. In 1972, he co-produced, and played keyboards on, the If album ''Waterfall'', as well as appearing on Solid Gold Cadillac's eponymous first album. In 1973 he played piano on the If album '' Double Diamond''. He and his songwriting partner of the 1980s Ian Levine wrote and produced some popular Hi-NRG club hits of the era for Miquel Brown, Barbara Pennington and Evelyn Thomas.
