A Saucerful Of Secrets
''A Saucerful of Secrets'' is the second studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 28 June 1968 by EMI Columbia in the United Kingdom and on 27 July 1968 in the United States by Tower Records. During recording, the mental health of singer and guitarist Syd Barrett deteriorated, so David Gilmour was recruited; Barrett left the band before the album's completion. Whereas Barrett had been the primary songwriter on Pink Floyd's debut album, ''The Piper at the Gates of Dawn'' (1967), on ''A Saucerful of Secrets'' each member contributed songwriting and lead vocals. Gilmour appeared on all but two songs, while Barrett contributed to three. "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" is the only song on which all five members appear. ''A Saucerful of Secrets'' reached number nine in the UK charts, but did not chart in the US until April 2019, peaking at number 158. "Scream Thy Last Scream" is a song by Pink Floyd, written by frontman Syd Barrett and scheduled to be the band's next single after "See Emily Play". Its first official release was on ''The Early Years 1965-1972'' box set in November 2016. Recording Only two takes are complete. Julia Dream
"Julia Dream" is the B-side of the Pink Floyd single "It Would Be So Nice". The song was the first to be released by the band with lead vocals by David Gilmour. Writing Written by bassist Roger Waters, "Julia Dream" is characterised by the slow tempo, the airy, ambient Mellotron sounds from keyboardist Richard Wright and lush chorus vocals. The song's lyrics include reference to an eiderdown, an item also mentioned in two other known Pink Floyd songs – Syd Barrett's " Flaming" and Gilmour/Waters's "A Pillow of Winds". "It Would Be So Nice" is a 1968 song by the rock band Pink Floyd, written by the keyboard player/singer Richard Wright. It was the fourth single released by the group and the first to feature new guitarist David Gilmour, following the departure of founding member Syd Barrett. The song was left out of the 1971 collection ''Relics'' which collected other rare tracks from Pink Floyd singles. Andrew King (music Manager)
Andrew King (born 1948) is a music manager, formerly for Blackhill Enterprises, where he co-managed Pink Floyd and others. King, Peter Jenner and the original four members of Pink Floyd were partners in Blackhill Enterprises. Under their guidance, Pink Floyd began performing on London's underground music scene, notably at a venue booked by the London Free School in Notting Hill, as well as the notorious " Games For May" concert at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on 12 May 1967, an event set up by both Jenner and King. After Syd Barrett's departure from Pink Floyd in 1968 Jenner and King ended their relationship with Pink Floyd and continued as managers for Barrett and other British rock bands. Nicholas Berkeley Mason, (born 27 January 1944) is an English drummer and a founder member of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd. He is the only member to feature on every Pink Floyd album, and the only constant member since its formation in 1965. He co-wrote Pink Floyd compositions such as " Echoes", "Time", " Careful with That Axe, Eugene", and " One of These Days". In 2018, he formed a new band, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, to perform music from Pink Floyd's early years. Richard William Wright (28 July 1943 – 15 September 2008) was an English musician who was a co-founder of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd. He played keyboards and sang, appearing on almost every Pink Floyd album and performing on all their tours. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of Pink Floyd. Wright grew up in Hatch End, Middlesex and met future Pink Floyd bandmates Roger Waters and Nick Mason while studying architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic, London. After being joined by frontman and songwriter Syd Barrett, the group found commercial success in 1967. "Paint Box" (or, "Paintbox" on later reissues) is a song by the rock band Pink Floyd, written and sung by keyboardist Richard Wright. It was first released in 1967 as the B-side to the single "Apples and Oranges". The song is about a man who lives in an abusive relationship and has artificial friends. Lyrics and music Musical features of the song include its long drum fills by Nick Mason, and a piano solo by Wright, which is panned around the stereo spectrum. Wright also doubles on tack piano in addition to the ordinary acoustic piano. "Apples and Oranges" is the third UK single by Pink Floyd, the final one written by Syd Barrett, and released in 1967. The B-side was " Paint Box" written by Richard Wright. The song is about a girl whom the narrator meets at the supermarket. The song was recorded shortly before the band's US tour, on 26 and 27 October. TV performances Pink Floyd, along with Barrett, mimed the song on their first US televised performances on ''The Pat Boone Show'' and ''American Bandstand''. Barrett kept his lips closed during the first performance but mimed competently on the latter show, of which footage survives. After Barrett was replaced by David Gilmour, the band recorded a promotional film in Belgium in a fruit market with Roger Waters lip synching, as Barrett had left the band by this point. Slide Guitar
Slide guitar is a technique for playing the guitar that is often used in blues music. It involves playing a guitar while holding a hard object (a slide) against the strings, creating the opportunity for glissando effects and deep vibratos that reflect characteristics of the human singing voice. It typically involves playing the guitar in the traditional position (flat against the body) with the use of a slide fitted on one of the guitarist's fingers. The slide may be a metal or glass tube, such as the neck of a bottle. The term bottleneck was historically used to describe this type of playing.
