Thomas B. Ricketts (15 January 1853 – 19 January 1939) was an English-born American stage and film actor and director who was a pioneer in the film industry. He portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge in the first American film adaptation of ''A Christmas Carol'' (1908), and directed one of the first motion pictures ever made in Hollywood. ''Photoplay'' was one of the first American film (another name for ''photoplay'') fan magazines. It was founded in 1911 in Chicago, the same year that J. Stuart Blackton founded '' Motion Picture Story,'' a magazine also directed at fans. For most of its run, ''Photoplay'' was published by Macfadden Publications. In 1921 ''Photoplay'' established what is considered the first significant annual movie award. The magazine ceased publication in 1980. History ''Photoplay'' began as a short fiction magazine concerned mostly with the plots and characters of films at the time and was used as a promotional tool for those films. In 1915, Julian Johnson and James R. Vivian Rich (May 26, 1893 – November 17, 1957) was an American silent film actress. Career Rich was born in Philadelphia and spent her early years there. Later the family moved to Boston and she completed her education at the Boston Latin High School. From high school she went to the stage and played in musical comedy before joining the American film company. She lived with her mother in Santa Barbara, California. She was signed by the Nestor Film Company in 1912 and starred in almost 200 films. Rich retired from films in 1931.
