A Balloon Site, Coventry
''A Balloon Site, Coventry'' is an oil on canvas painting undertaken in 1942 by the British artist Laura Knight. It portrays a group of people—mostly women—working to launch a barrage balloon on the outside of Coventry, an industrial city in the Midlands that was the target of a German bombing raid in November 1940, when over 10,000 incendiary bombs were dropped on the city. Knight had painted ''In for Repairs'', showing members of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) repairing a damaged barrage balloon, in early 1942. The Air Ministry was so impressed that they asked her to paint the WAAF in action. She was commissioned by the War Artists' Advisory Committee (WAAC) and paid 100 guineas for the work, which was undertaken in July and August 1942. Laura Knight
Dame Laura Knight ( Johnson; 4 August 1877 – 7 July 1970) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolours, etching, engraving and drypoint. Knight was a painter in the figurative, realist tradition, who embraced English Impressionism. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain. Her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. In 1929 she was created a Dame, and in 1936 became the second woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy.The first was Annie Swynnerton, who was elected to full membership in 1922, although shortly afterwards her membership status was changed to 'associate' when it was realized she was over the normal cut-off age for full membership, 75, at time of admission. Oriana Baddeley
Oriana Baddeley is a professor of transnational art history at UAL where from 2011 to 2020 she was Dean of Research. She was born Lucy Oriana Halkett Baddeley in Singapore in 1954, the daughter of British diplomat John Halkett Baddeley (1920-1972) and Greek born Maria Roussen (1916-2005). She was educated at Holland Park Comprehensive, London and studied history and theory of art at the University of Essex where she completed her PhD in 1986 under the supervision of Dawn Adès. Wythall is a village and civil parish in the Bromsgrove District, in the north-east corner of the county of Worcestershire, England. Wythall parish borders Solihull and Birmingham, and had a population of 11,377 in the UK census of 2001. The civil parish was created in 1911 when the remainder of the previous King's Norton civil parish was absorbed into the then County Borough of Birmingham.
