AES Railcar
The AES (Automotor Eléctrico Suburbano) is an Electric rail, electric passenger rail, passenger railcar that has been in use in Chile since 1977, originally with Ferrocarril del Norte, and later for Valparaíso Metro, MERVAL, the Valparaiso region metro system. History A total of 20 units, service numbers AES1 - AES20, have been built in Argentina by the English company General Electric Company, GEC and Argentine company Fiat Concorde (Materfer, FIAT MATERFER) between 1976 and 1977. Their main area of passenger service has been rapid suburban transit between Valparaiso and Limache, with extended service between Valparaiso and Santiago, Chile, Santiago during the 1980s, and service on the Biotren in the South of Chile since the 2000s. Their maximum speed is 130 km/h (80 mph). Accidents There was a major accident at the town of Queronque on February 17, 1986, involving two AES units. General Electric Company
The General Electric Company (GEC) was a major British industrial conglomerate involved in consumer and defence electronics, communications, and engineering. Limache
Limache is a Chilean town and township in the Marga Marga Province, Valparaíso Region. Limache is the only township of Chile that has two urban areas: San Francisco de Limache on the north side of the Pelumpén stream, and Limache Viejo on the south side. Limache is famous for its tomato production and the religious feast of "The Virgin of the 40 Hours" ( es, La Virgen de las 40 Horas). Biotren
The Biotren ( es, Biotrén) is an at-grade urban commuter rail system that serves a large part of the city of Concepción, Chile, capital of the region of Bío-Bío, also known as Greater Concepción or Concepción Metropolitan Area, both synonyms of "city" according to the urbanistic standards and laws of Chile, of which this city is the second biggest, most populous and important of the country. Biotren connects the boroughs or comunas of Concepción Centro (downtown borough), Talcahuano, Hualpén, San Pedro de la Paz, Chiguayante and Hualqui. The system is managed by Ferrocarriles Suburbanos de Concepción S.A. Materfer
Materfer (an acronym for Material Ferroviario S.A.) is an Argentine manufacturer of railway and road vehicles, located in the city of Ferreyra in Córdoba Province. The company was established by Fiat Concord in the late 1950s, being its subsidiary until 1980 when Sevel Argentina took over Fiat vehicles. Materfer has built several types of rolling stock in its history, such as diesel locomotives, coaches and trams, most of them for the state-owned company Ferrocarriles Argentinos which operated trains within Argentina from 1948 to 1991. The company has also exported its products to Cuba, Bolivia, Uruguay and Chile. Materfer owns a factory with 200 machines, mainly electrofusion, folding, sheet metal cutters and overhead crane machines. In the 1980s Materfer employed 2,500 people, mainly in the manufacture of diesel locomotives, coaches and railcars for the Argentine and international markets.
