A1 Motorway (Portugal)
The A 1—Autoestrada do Norte—is the biggest and the most important highway in Portugal. It connects the two largest cities in Portugal, Lisbon and Porto, also passing by some district capitals and industrial zones. Being the most important connection between two major cities, it was designed to be parallel to other roads, like the EN1. At 303 km long, the highway starts in Lisbon, in the interchange between the CRIL and the Vasco da Gama Bridge. Then the road goes along some cities near Lisbon, mainly Alverca do Ribatejo and Alenquer. Vialonga, Portugal
Vialonga is a town and civil parish in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal. Its population in 2021 was 21,261. History The land where present-day Vialonga stands was occupied by humans in prehistoric ages, as evidenced by the dolmen cemeteries in Monte Serves and Casal do Penedo in the Vialonga parish. Other prehistoric religious objects, ornaments, metallic weapons and ceramics have been found in the area. It is believed that the settlement in this area comes from the times of Al-Andalus, Moorish rule in the Iberian Peninsula. Benavente () is a municipality and parish in Santarém District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 29,019, in an area of 521.38 km². History In 1199 the fixation of foreign settlers on the left bank of the Tagus River created a Town on a peninsula in the tagus estuary. Situated in the western limits of Coruche castle dominion, subordinate to the Order of Calatrava. This small settlement remained under the Seignory of this Military Order, which named it Benavente, the same name as a castle of the same Military order in the Kingdom of León (Benavente, Zamora). Vila Franca de Xira () is a city and municipality in the Lisbon District in Portugal. The population in 2021 was 137,659, in an area of 318.19 km2. Situated on both banks of the Tagus River, 32 km north-east of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, settlement in the area dates back to neolithic times, as evidenced by findings in the Cave of Pedra Furada. Vila Franca de Xira is said to have been founded by French followers of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, around 1200.
