The Azores Geopark ( pt, Geoparque Açores) is a network of 121 geographically-dispersed sites of geographic heritage and marine areas that covers the nine volcanic islands of the archipelago of the Azores. This network is managed by the Azores Geopark Association, a non-profit association, with its headquarters in Horta on the island of Faial, established 19 May 2010. It is part of the European Geoparks Network and the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The Association's mission is to ensure the geological conservation, environmental education and sustainable development, while promoting the well-being of the population and a respect for the environment. Geopark The term is used to define a well-defined territory and boundary, whose existence is based on an exceptional geological heritage and a strategy that promotes the well-being of the population while maintaining a respect for the environment. Consequently, the Geopark includes a number of significant sites of geological inter ...

It is included in two Natura 2000 sites, one of which is classified as an Important Bird Area. Part of the plateau also includes a ramsar wetland. It is one of the three main geomorphological units that comprise Pico Island. Location and geomorphology The Achada Plateau is located on the highlands of Pico, the highest and second largest island on the archipelago of the Azores. The extensive volcanic mountain range, located in the eastern half of the island at a mean altitude of , stretches from Lagoa do Capitão (northeast of Mount Pico) to the easternmost part of the island. It is characterized by the steep slopes that limit it to the south and north and by the presence in the axial zone of the range of various volcano-tectonic alignments of cinder and spatter cones and eruptive fiss ...

Dom João De Castro Bank
Dom João de Castro Bank ( pt, Banco de D. João de Castro) is a large submarine volcano located in the central north Atlantic Ocean, between the islands of São Miguel and Terceira in the archipelago of the Azores. History The first historical reference correlated with the submarine volcanoes between São Miguel and Terceira occurred after two ships of the French corsair Henry Tourin sank in the spring of 1718. The last major eruption associated with this region occurred on 31 December 1720.Sérgio Paulo Ávila (1997), p.1 Beginning as a submarine eruption, it eventually built into a Surtseyan eruption that resulted in the formation of a circular island long and in altitude. Smoke and steam released by the eruption was visible from the islands of São Miguel and Terceira. The eruption also caused multiple small earthquakes felt on those islands. Designated the ''Ilha Nova'' (New Island), it remained above sea-level for only two years, reaching a height of and diameter of . ...

Vila Franca Islet
Vila Franca Islet ( pt, Ilhéu de Vila Franca) is a vegetated uninhabited islet located off the south-central coast of the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The entire islet and surrounding waters constitute a protected nature reserve, while remaining a popular destination for swimming and cliff diving. Geography Vila Franca Islet is the exposed remains of a Surtseyan volcanic cone of phreatomagmatic origin heavily eroded by the sea and seismic forces over time. It is composed mostly of basalt and palagonitic tuff, resulting in characteristic vertically-fractured rock formations resembling columns. The islet contains a few underwater caves. The islet is located between and off the south-central coast of the island of São Miguel, adjacent the municipality, town, and port of Vila Franca do Campo. The semicircular islet measures approximately or in area. The islet's highest point is approximately above sea level. One of the islet's most ...

Sete Cidades Massif
Sete Cidades Massif is a stratovolcanic complex, referring to a polygenetic volcano and caldera, located in western part of the island of São Miguel, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. More recognizable for the Lagoa das Sete Cidades at its centre, the volcanic complex includes centuries of geomorphological structures that include lava domes, cones, lava flows and maar geomorphology that have marked its history. History The almost circular caldera is a nested structure formed as a result of three separate caldera collapse episodes,Robert B. Moore (1990), p.603 each associated with explosive eruptions.Jose Pacheo et al. (2002), p.4-5 These caldera collapse episodes occurred following explosive eruptions that formed the ''Risco'', ''Bretanha'' and ''Santa Barbara'' pyroclastic fields.Jose Pacheo et al. (2002), p.5-6 The first phase occurred 35,700 years ago, and ceased with the collapse of the principal volcano. A secondary phase began around 28,750 years ago and w ...

Furnas
Furnas is a civil parish in the municipality of Povoação on the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,439, in an area of 34.43 km2. The parish is one of the largest in the island and in the Azores. It is located east of Lagoa and Ponta Delgada, west of Povoação and southeast of Ribeira Grande. History One of the earliest references to Furnas came from the harvesting of trees in the valley of Furnas, in order to assist the construction of many of the homes destroyed by the 1522 earthquakes and landslides in Vila Franca do Campo. This includes numerous trees used to rebuild the parochial church, a project begun by Donatary-Captain Rui Gonçalves da Câmara. In 1553, his predecessor Manuel da Câmara, issued an edict to re-plant these trees after the area was nearly deforested, and roadways were expanded under his son, Rui Gonçalves da Câmara, in order to develop the area, allowing cattle herding in the valley after 1577. Monte Brasil
Monte Brasil is the remnants of a tuff volcano (and peninsula) connecting the south coast of Terceira in the central Azores, overlooking the city of Angra do Heroísmo. Monte Brasil is flanked by two bays: the Bay of Angra (named for the city) to its east, and the Bay of Fanal to its west, and was used as a defensive point during the history of Angra, resulting in the construction of various forts and redoubts, including the Fortress of São João Baptista overlooking the city. History The formation of Monte Brasil was the result of various eruptions of the Guilherme Moniz volcano, a large central volcano on the island of Terceira, this difficult to identify owing to subsequent eruptions and lava flows.França et al (2003), p.31 Although this structure is eroded, there is considerable evidence of its influence, including, specifically: * a number of trachyte domes and basaltic eruptive centres around the interior; * two Surtseyan cones: Monte Brasil and the Cabras Islets; and * s ...

Algar Do Carvão
The Algar do Carvão (''Cavern of Coal'') is an ancient lava tube or volcanic vent located in the central part of the island of Terceira Island, Terceira in the Portugal, Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. It lies within the Freguesia (Portugal), civil parish of Porto Judeu in the Concelho, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo. History The existence of the cavern had been known for a long time, but the depth and lack of ambient light, made any descent difficult, owing to the vertical descent, and delayed any real exploration.Paulo Barcelos/SIARAM (September 2010) On 26 January 1893, the first descent, ''"...with the use of a simple rope, was accomplished by Cândido Corvelo and Luis Sequeira."'' The second descent was made in 1934, by Didier Couto, who produced the first rough map of the interior. This drawing, based on visual observations alone (rather than measurements), turned out to be quite accurate. On 18 August 1963, a group of enthusiasts organized a descent using a "c ...
