Azalea State Reserve
Azalea State Natural Reserve is a state nature reserve of California, United States, located in McKinleyville, an unincorporated area of Humboldt County. This area is just north of the college town of Arcata and slightly above the Mad River not far from where it enters the Pacific Ocean. The reserve is dedicated to the preservation of the western azalea (''Rhododendron occidentale''), whose pink and white flowers bloom in profusion each April and May. It has a short self-guided nature trail with emphasis on plants of the north coast region. There is a picnic area available. The property was acquired by the state in 1943. Other adjacent visitor attractions include Trinidad State Beach, Sue-meg State Park, and Fort Humboldt State Historic Park. Humboldt County () is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 136,463. The county seat is Eureka. Humboldt County comprises the Eureka–Arcata–Fortuna, California Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the far North Coast, about north of San Francisco. Rhododendron Occidentale
''Rhododendron occidentale'', the western azalea or California azalea, is one of two deciduous ''Rhododendron'' species native to western North America (the other is ''Rhododendron albiflorum''). The western azalea is known to occur as far north as Lincoln and Douglas Counties in Oregon and as far south as the mountains of San Diego county. Typically found in the coastal ranges of western North America, it also grows in the Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges, but is not known east of them. Fort Humboldt State Historic Park is a California state park, located in Eureka, California, United States. Displays interpret the former U.S. Army fort, which was staffed from 1853–1870, the interactions between European Americans and Native Americans in roughly the same period, and both logging equipment and local narrow gauge railroad history of the region. Sue-meg State Park (formerly Patrick's Point State Park) is a in Humboldt County, California near Trinidad on the Redwood Coast, situated on a lushly forested promontory above the Pacific Ocean. Trinidad State Beach
Trinidad State Beach is a state beach north of Eureka in Humboldt County, California. The offshore rocks are part of the California Coastal National Monument. Colorful tide pools provide specimens to Humboldt State University's Fred Telonicher Marine Laboratory located in Trinidad. Nearby parks include Little River State Beach just south of Trinidad and to the north, Sue-meg State Park. The Beach's latitude and longitude are 41.0594 / -124.1420.
