Aylett Hawes
Aylett Hawes (April 21, 1768August 31, 1833) was a nineteenth-century doctor, politician, planter and slaveholder from Virginia. Early life and education Born in Culpeper County in the Colony of Virginia, Hawes received a private classical education. He then studied medicine and finished his education in Edinburgh, Scotland. Career Upon returning to Virginia, Hawes practiced medicine as well as bought several plantations in Culpeper County and what became Rappahannock County, Virginia, which he farmed using enslaved labor. He owned 25 slaves in Culpeper County in 1810. A decade later, Hawes owned 49 slaves. In the last census before his death, he owned 70 slaves. Culpeper County voters elected Hawes as one of their two representatives in the Virginia House of Delegates. Aylett Hawes Buckner
Aylett Hawes Buckner (December 14, 1816 – February 5, 1894) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri, nephew of Aylett Hawes and cousin of Richard Hawes and Albert Gallatin Hawes. Born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Buckner attended Georgetown College, Washington, D.C., and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He engaged in teaching for several years. He moved to Palmyra, Missouri, in 1837. He served as deputy sheriff. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1838 and commenced practice in Bowling Green, Missouri. He became editor of the Salt River Journal. Buckner was elected clerk of the Pike County Court in 1841. He moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1850 and continued the practice of law. Richard Aylett Buckner (February 5, 1784 – December 8, 1847) was a lawyer and farmer who served United States representative from Kentucky as well as Surveyor-General of Kentucky and Kentucky judge of the 18th judicial district. He may be best known as the father of Aylette Buckner who also served a Representative from Kentucky, or as the eldest of three American judges of the same name. Aylett Sammes (1636?–1679?) was an English antiquary, noted for his theories of Phoenician influence on the Welsh language. Life A grandson of John Sammes, lord of the manor of Little Totham, Essex, and son of Thomas Sammes by his wife Mary (née Jeffrey), he was born at Kelvedon in Essex about 1636. His father's younger brother, Edward, married into the Aylett family of Rivenhall. In 1648 he entered Felsted School under John Glascock, a Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge, and a teacher of repute in East Anglia. On 3 July 1655 he was admitted a fellow-commoner of Christ's College; he graduated B.A. in 1657, was admitted to the Inner Temple on 28 October in the same year, and proceeded M.A., probably at Cambridge about 1659, though there appears to be no record of the fact. Allen James Aylett OBE (24 April 1934 – 16 September 2022) was an Australian rules football player and administrator. He was the chairman/president of the North Melbourne Football Club from 1971 to 1976, and then again from 2001 to 2005. In between, he had been the chairman of the then Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1977 to 1984. Aylett worked as a dentist throughout his career and into his eighties. Early life Aylett was born in Melbourne on 24 April 1934. He attended University High School in his hometown. William Edward Aylett (15 November 1900 – 10 August 1976) was an Australian politician who served as a Senator for Tasmania from 1938 to 1965, representing the Labor Party (ALP). He worked as a miner, mail contractor, and farmer before entering politics. He was first elected to the Senate at the age of 36 and won re-election on five more occasions. Aylett was placed at the bottom of the ALP ticket for the 1953 election, but issued his own campaign material and was re-elected. He was subsequently censured by the ALP state executive for his defiance of the party's instructions. In 1959, a year into his final term, Aylett decided to move to Queensland's Gold Coast, for what he said were health reasons. Charley Bischoff "Tinny" Aylett (5 October 1913 – 11 September 1966) was an Australian politician. He served in the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1946 to 1964, including as Speaker of the House from 1959 to 1964. During his political career he simultaneously ran a pub in Hobart. Aylett was born in Waratah, Tasmania, as one of twelve children. His older brother Bill Aylett was a senator. In 1946 he was elected to the House of Assembly as a Labor member for Darwin. He was promoted to the ministry in December 1947 with responsibility for housing, initially as an honorary minister and then as Minister for Housing. He resigned from cabinet in April 1949 after a select committee found that he had misled parliament about the amount of materials held by the State Housing Authority. Kurt Aylett (born 2 April 1992) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Greater Western Sydney Giants and Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).
