''Ayka'' (russian: Айка) is a 2018 drama film directed by Sergey Dvortsevoy. It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Samal Yeslyamova won the award for Best Actress. It was selected as the Kazakhstani entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, making the December shortlist. The film was produced under the working title ''My Little One''. Plot The story is centered around a young Kyrgyz woman named Ayka who lives in Moscow, Russia. After giving birth to a baby, she abandons the newborn, escaping through a hospital window. She is desperate for income, as she owes money to criminals but now struggles to repay the debt. She returns to a job plucking chicken feathers. After the work is done, the men running the operation leave without paying their workers. Samal Yeslyamova
Samal Ilyaskyzy Yeslyamova ( kk, Самал Ілиясқызы Есләмова, ''Samal Iliiasqyzy Eslämova''; born 1 September 1984) is a Kazakh film actress. She is recognized internationally for starring in the film ''Ayka'' directed by Sergey Dvortsevoy, which won her the award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. Biography Yeslyamova was born in Petropavl, North Kazakhstan Region, Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union. She always dreamed of becoming a journalist but eventually decided to become an actress. While studying at Russian Academy of Theatre Arts – GITIS in 2008, Yeslyamova played in the film '' Tulpan'' by Sergey Dvortsevoy. This is a list of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. The deadline for submissions was 1 October 2018, with the Academy announcing a list of eligible films on 8 October. A total of 89 countries submitted a film, with 87 of those being accepted. The 71st annual Cannes Film Festival was held from 8 to 19 May 2018. Australian actress Cate Blanchett acted as President of the Jury. The Japanese film ''Shoplifters'', directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, won the Palme d'Or. Asghar Farhadi's psychological thriller '' Everybody Knows'', starring Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Ricardo Darín, opened the festival and competed in the Main Competition section. Sergey Vladimirovich Dvortsevoy (born 1962) is a Kazakh filmmaker of Russian origin. His 2008 feature film '' Tulpan'', was Kazakhstan's 2009 Academy Awards official submission to Foreign Language Film category. Dvortsevoy worked as an aviation engineer. He also worked for nine years as a radio engineer at Aeroflot; before studying film in Moscow in the early 1990s. His films immediately garnered international acclaim, receiving prizes and recognition at festivals around the world, including the nomination of Bread Day (1998) for the prestigious Joris Ivens Award at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival.
