Ayibobo
Ayibobo is a band from New York City, United States that is Jean-Paul Bourelly's side project. ''Ayibobo'' is one spelling of a Haitian Creole word that means "amen". MusicHound described the band as combining "Haitian singers and drummers with jazz horns, Bourelly's style, and EU drummer Ju Ju House." Although the band is from New York, most of the band members are Haitian. The band released their first album ''Freestyle'' in 1993, produced by Jean-Paul Bourelly and Kazunori Sugiyama. The album was recorded in New York City from April to May 1993. ''The Wire'' magazine said that on the album Bourelly "immersed his wonderfully jarring, new-Hendrix sound in the chants and polyrhythms of non-geographically specific Africa. It’s tightly played and well recorded, occasionally hinting at some new kind of psychedelic funk, but you can't help wishing Bourelly would step out and wail like we know he can." DIW Records is a Japanese record label specializing in avant-garde jazz. It is a subsidiary of Disk Union. Kazunori Sugiyama was an executive producer for the label before starting Tzadik Records with John Zorn. DIW's name stands for "Discs in the World" and is from a music magazine sold at Disk Union stores that announced the latest releases from American and European labels. Wilber Morris recorded the first album for DIW in 1983 in New York City. Jean-Paul Bourelly
Jean-Paul Etienne Bourelly (born November 23, 1960) is an American guitarist whose music crosses the boundaries of jazz fusion and rock. Bourelly was born in Chicago, Illinois, to parents from Haiti. His grandmother taught him Yoruba music. When he was ten years old, he sang at the Lyric Opera. He took lessons on piano and drums. He played acoustic guitar, but after hearing Jimi Hendrix on the radio, he bought an electric guitar with money he had saved from working at his uncle's gas station. During the same year, a late-night radio show introduced him to the music of Charlie Parker, which impressed him. In 1979, he moved to New York City. During the 1980s, he worked with Muhal Richard Abrams, Olu Dara, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, Steve Coleman, Marc Ribot, Elliott Sharp, Archie Shepp, and David Torn. , also known as Haitian roots music, is a musical style that began in Haiti in the 1970s, when musicians began combining elements of traditional Haitian Vodou ceremonial and folkloric music with various musical styles. Craig S. Harris (born September 10, 1953) is an American jazz trombonist, who started working with Sun Ra in 1976. He also has worked with Abdullah Ibrahim, David Murray (saxophonist), David Murray, Lester Bowie, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers (jazz musician), Sam Rivers, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Charlie Haden. Vaccine (or sometimes ''vaksin'') are rudimentary single-note trumpets found in Haiti and, to a lesser extent, the Dominican Republic as well as Jamaica. They consist of a simple tube, usually bamboo, with a mouthpiece at one end. They are thus also referred to as ''banbou'' or ''bambú'', as well as ''bois bourrique'' (or ''bwa bourik''), ''granboe'', ''fututo'', or ''boom pipe''. Psychedelic Funk
Psychedelic funk (also called P-funk or funkadelia, and sometimes conflated with psychedelic soul) is a music genre that combines funk music with elements of psychedelic rock. Polyrhythm
Polyrhythm () is the simultaneous use of two or more rhythms that are not readily perceived as deriving from one another, or as simple manifestations of the same meter. The rhythmic layers may be the basis of an entire piece of music (cross-rhythm), or a momentary section. Polyrhythms can be distinguished from irrational rhythms, which can occur within the context of a single Part (music), part; polyrhythms require at least two rhythms to be played concurrently, one of which is typically an irrational rhythm.
