Ayden Aces
The Ayden Aces were a minor league baseball team based in Ayden, North Carolina. In 1937 and 1938, the Aces played as exclusively as members of the Class D level Coastal Plain League, hosting home games at the Ayden High School Park. History The Ayden "Aces" moniker was first used by a semi–pro team that played in a league named the Coastal Plain League prior to minor league play. Minor league baseball began in Ayden, North Carolina in 1937. The 1937 Ayden Aces became charter members of the eight–team Class D level Coastal Plain League. Ayden joined the Goldsboro Goldbugs, Greenville Greenies, Kinston Eagles, New Bern Bears, Snow Hill Billies, Tarboro Combs and Williamston Martins in playing the first season of Class D level baseball for the league. Beginning Coastal Plain League play on May 6, 1937, the Ayden Aces finished the regular season in 5th place. Doyt Morris
Doyt Theodore Morris (July 15, 1916 – July 4, 1984) was a professional baseball outfielder and first baseman. He played six games for the 1937 Philadelphia Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB). Listed at and , he batted and threw right-handed. Biography Morris attended Wake Forest University, where he played college baseball and college basketball. He then played a total of 391 games in minor league baseball during 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1941. He primarily played as a first baseman in the minor leagues, with some appearances at third base and in the outfield. In 1937, Morris appeared in six games with the major league Philadelphia Athletics. He had a .154 batting average (2-for-13), without a home run or RBI. Both of his hits were singles in games against the Chicago White Sox; the first off of Bill Dietrich on June 7, and the second off of Thornton Lee on September 22. Coastal Plain League
The Coastal Plain League (CPL) is a wood-bat collegiate summer baseball league, featuring college players recruited from throughout the nation. The league takes its name from the Class D level Coastal League which operated in the area from 1937 to 1952. History The modern Coastal Plain League was formed with six teams in 1997. The league has expanded over the years with teams across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia, with the 2023 addition of the Boone Bigfoots being the most recent expansion, bringing the league to 14 teams. Founding The league was founded in 1997 by Pete Bock. Bock conceived the idea in the early 1990s while traveling long distances to the Valley Baseball League in Virginia to see his son, Jeff, play summer baseball.
