Daniel Axtell
Colonel Daniel Axtell, 1622 to 19 October 1660, was a grocer and religious radical from Hertfordshire who served with the Parliamentarian army during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. He was in charge of security during the Trial of Charles I at Westminster Hall in January 1649, and as a result was excluded from the Act of Indemnity and Oblivion after the 1660 Stuart Restoration. He was hanged, drawn and quartered for treason on 19 October 1660. Biography Axtell was a Baptist from Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, who was apprenticed as a grocer. He joined the New Model Army, serving in John Pickering's regiment of Foote, and rose to the rank of colonel. Axtell played a big part in the English Civil War after being recruited by Parliament in 1643. Frances Sevilla Cleveland Axtell (June 12, 1866 – May 27, 1953) was one of the first female legislators in the United States of America, elected to the Washington House of Representatives in 1912. Early life Cleveland was born to William and Mary Cleveland on June 12, 1866. From Sterling, Illinois, Cleveland's father was a farmer and stock-raiser. Personal life Cleveland married Dr. William Axtell on June 11, 1891. The couple had two daughters, Ruth Axtell (born September 28, 1892) and Helen Frances Axtell (born July 23, 1901). Axtell earned a PhD at DePauw University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, before moving to Bellingham, Washington. James Wickliffe Axtell (April 16, 1852 – December 23, 1909) was a newspaper man and prominent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Biography Axtell was born in Pennsylvania, the son of the Rev. Dr. Philip Axtell who founded a number of Cumberland Presbyterian Church congregations in Pennsylvania, most notably the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. An alternative spelling of his name is James Wycliffe Axtell. Beginning at about age thirteen, James worked in the Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, printing office and set type for ''The Cumberland Presbyterian'', the official newspaper of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church denomination. Samuel Beach Axtell (October 14, 1819 – August 6, 1891) was an American jurist and politician. He is noted for serving as Chief Justice of the New Mexico Territorial Supreme Court, territorial Governor of Utah and New Mexico, and a two-term Congressman from California. Early life Axtell was born in Franklin County, Ohio, to a family of farmers. An ancestor was an officer in the American Revolutionary army and his grandfather was a Colonel of a New Jersey regiment during the War of 1812. He married Adaline S. Williams of Summit County, Ohio, September 20, 1840 and moved to Mt. Clemens, Michigan in 1843. Axtell was a graduate of the Western Reserve College at Oberlin, Ohio and was admitted to the bar in Ohio in the 1830s.
