Awapuni Railway Station
Awapuni railway station was a station in Kairanga County, on the Foxton Branch and, from 1908, the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand, now in the Palmerston North suburb of Awapuni. It was beside the Mangaone Stream, near its confluence with the Kawau Stream, about west of Maxwells Line on the north side of Pioneer Highway. Nothing remains of the former station, except a wide verge, partly occupied by a cycleway, built in 2015. History Awa Puni station opened on the Foxton tramway on 26 July 1873, from Foxton. A Māori petition for a platform at 3 Mile Bush on the Foxton Branch was presented on 7 August 1876. The Māori settlement at Awapuni was near the railway, with a population of 71 in 1881. The station reopened with conversion of the wooden tramway to a railway on 20 October 1876, though Awapuni wasn't shown in the timetable when services through to Whanganui began in 1878. The North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) is the main railway line in the North Island of New Zealand, connecting the capital city Wellington with the country's largest city, Auckland. The line is long, built to the New Zealand rail gauge of and serves the large cities of Palmerston North and Hamilton. Paekakariki Railway Station
Paekakariki railway station in Paekākāriki on the Kapiti Coast, New Zealand is an intermediate station on the Kapiti Line for Metlink's electric multiple unit commuter trains from Wellington. Paekākāriki was the terminal station of the commuter service from 1940 to 1983, when the service was extended to Paraparaumu, and to Waikanae in 2011. The station was opened in 1886. Initially banking locomotives were attached at Paekākāriki for the steep "hill" up to Pukerua Bay, and steam locomotives were changed there for electric locomotives to Wellington from 1940 to the 1960s. The large wooden station building on an island platform is used by a museum, and has a bookshop run by Irving Lipshaw and Michael O’Leary in one section. Feilding Railway Station
Feilding railway station was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line in Feilding, New Zealand. It was opened on 1 October 1876 and closed on 1 July 2002. The station is now used by Feilding Information Centre and an occasional excursion train. The south wall of the station is decorated with a mural, which features Feilding's 1999 clock tower, which has a 1902 clock. The nearby former goods shed has a mural depicting the X Class loco stored at Feilding. The murals were by Eric Brew, who was a resident artist and painted many other murals in the town. Feilding had hoped to be the junction of the North Island Main Trunk and the Marton–New Plymouth line so had made Kimbolton Road exceptionally wide, but that honour went to Marton and Longburn. Sanson Tramway
The Sanson Tramway in the Manawatu region of New Zealand operated from 1885 until 1945. Owned by the Manawatu County Council, it connected with the national railway network at Himatangi on the Foxton Branch. It was never part of the national network. Construction After the construction of a tramway (later upgraded to a railway) linking Foxton and Palmerston North, settlers north of Foxton began efforts to have a rail link built from to their settlements so they could easily access the port. In 1878 the Foxton and Sanson Railway Company was formed in order to build a line northwards from Himatangi (then named Carnarvon) to Sanson, and it envisaged that the line would become part of a trunk route from Wellington to the north.
