Avraham Qanaï
Avraham Ben-Raḥamiël Qanaï (אברהם בן-רחמיאל קנאי) (November 25, 1946 - May 30, 2021), whose original surname was Blank (source: Ḥakham Meir Rekhavi), was born to an Ashkenazi Jewish family that hailed from Romania (source: Ḥakham Meir Rekhavi). Qanaï was on his way to India in 1968 with a stopover in Israel when the late Ḥakham Mordecai Alfandari (1929–1999) met him - the first Karaite he came in contact with in his life - and convinced him of the view that Karaite Judaism was the truth (source: Ḥakham Meir Rekhavi). The late Ḥakham Immanuel Massouda (the first Chief Karaite Ḥakham in Israel since 1948) met him shortly afterward and gave him a Ḥakham's cap (hat) as a gift (source: Ḥakham Meir Rekhavi). Ḥakham
''Hakham'' (or ''chakam(i), haham(i), hacham(i)''; he, חכם ', "wise") is a term in Judaism, meaning a wise or skillful man; it often refers to someone who is a great Torah scholar. It can also refer to any cultured and learned person: "He who says a wise thing is called a ''hakham'', even if he be not a Jew." Hence in Talmudic-Midrashic literature, wise gentiles are commonly called ' ("wise men of the nations of the world"). In Sephardic usage, ''hakham'' is a synonym for "rabbi". In ancient times ''Hakham'' as an official title is found as early as the first Sanhedrin, after the reconstruction of that body, when the Hadrianic religious persecutions had ceased.
