Avontuur
Avontuur is a town situated in the Garden Route District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The town is located 13km south-east of Uniondale on an intersection of the R339 and R62 regional routes. History The name is Afrikaans for ''adventure''; its origin, however, remains uncertain. The river from which the town takes its name was known in 1778. Avontuur Railway
The Avontuur Railway is a closed railway line between Port Elizabeth and the town of Avontuur in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. It is the longest narrow gauge route in the world at a length of . "Avontuur" is the Afrikaans and Dutch word for "adventure". History The railway was built by the government of the Cape Colony between 1890 and 1906, to connect the Langkloof fruit growing industry with the new port at Port Elizabeth. The section of line between Humewood Road and Humansdorp was opened for public traffic on 1 November 1905. In 1903 a request was laid before the then government in order to add a branch line to Patensie. This branch was commissioned on 3 April 1914. In 1906 a branch line was opened to the Port Elizabeth's suburb Walmer and in 1928 a twelve mile long private branch was constructed to the Eastern Province Cement Company (EPCC). Langkloof
The Langkloof is a 160 km long valley in South Africa, lying between Herold, a small village northeast of George, and The Heights - just beyond Twee Riviere. R339 Road (South Africa)
The R339 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Knysna with Uniondale via Avontuur. It is primarily a gravel road and crosses the Langkloof Mountains at Prince Alfred's pass. From its southern origin at the N2 in Knysna, it heads north. It meets the north-western terminus of the R340 and heads into the Prince Alfred's Pass. On the other side, it meets the R62 at Avontuur at a staggered interchange. It then heads into another pass, the Uniondale Poort Pass, before reaching Uniondale. At Uniondale it is cosigned with the N9 heading north-east. It diverges from the N9 just north of the town heading north to its origin at the R341. The tarred section of the road between Avontuur and Uniondale was closed in 2007 due to flood damage but was since re-opened. It is advised that this pass be driven in a 4x4 vehicle, or at minimum a vehicle with high ground clearance. R62 Road (South Africa)
The R62 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Ashton with Humansdorp. The R62 runs through the Little Karoo and the Langkloof, passing through Montagu, Ladismith, Calitzdorp, Oudtshoorn, and Joubertina. Route Western Cape The R62 begins in the Breede River Valley at an intersection with the R60, east of Ashton. It immediately crosses the Langeberg Mountains via the Cogmanskloof Pass, entering the Little Karoo on the opposite side of the mountains and passing through Montagu. It then follows the northern foothills of the Langberg mountains as far as Barrydale, before heading in a north-easterly direction to Ladismith. The route then heads east to follow the Swartberg Mountains, crossing the Gamka River through the Huisrivier Pass and passing through Calitzdorp before reaching the Little Karoo's largest town, Oudtshoorn.
