Avoca ( ) is an unincorporated community in Jones County, Texas, United States. It is on State Highway 6 at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Roads 600 and 1636, 8 mi southeast of Stamford. Avoca is part of the Abilene, Texas metropolitan statistical area. History Avoca was laid out at its current location in 1900, when the railroad was extended to that point; the town site had formerly been located a few miles away. The name is derived from the post office at the former site called Avo, before then the small town was called Spring Creek. In 2022 Avoca currently has 2 churches Avoca Baptist Church Pastor Mims and Avoca United Methodist Church formly Pastor was Dennis Huffaker and the Lueders Avoca High School. State Highway 6 (SH 6) runs from the Red River, the Texas–Oklahoma state line, to northwest of Galveston, where it is known as the Old Galveston Highway. In Sugar Land and Missouri City, it is known as Alvin-Sugarland Road and runs perpendicular to Interstate 69/ U.S. Highway 59 (I-69/US 59). Stamford, Texas
Stamford is a city on the border of Jones and Haskell Counties in west-central Texas. The population was 3,124 at the 2010 census, down from 3,636 at the 2000 census. Henry McHarg, president of the Texas Central Railroad, named the site in 1900 for his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut. The city is home to the Texas Cowboy Reunion. Abilene ( ) is a city in Taylor and Jones Counties in Texas, United States. Its population was 125,182 at the 2020 census, making it the 27th-most populous city in the state of Texas. Lueders-Avoca Independent School District
Lueders-Avoca Independent School District is a public school district based in Lueders, Texas (USA). In addition to Lueders, the district serves the unincorporated communities of Avoca and Nugent in eastern Jones County. A portion of Shackelford County also lies within the district. Charles Walter Stenholm (born October 26, 1938) is an American businessman and Democratic Party politician from a rural district of the State of Texas. After establishing himself as owner/operator of a large cotton farm, he entered politics and was elected to Congress in his first run for office. Stenholm was a Democratic Party member of the United States House of Representatives for 13 terms, representing Texas's 17th congressional district from 1979 to 2005. He was known for his conservative social positions, helping garner conservative Democratic support for President Ronald Reagan's tax cuts in 1981, and gaining passage of a new farm bill in 2002 that doubled farm subsidies for Texas agribusiness.
