Avispa Mídia is an independent journalism collective, reporting on corporate activity, criminality and equity issues in Mexico and Central America. Organisation Avispa Mídia translates into English as ''Wasp Media'', and is a Mexican website that reports on land rights, exploitation, organised crime, paramilitary activities and extractive industries in Central America and Mexico. It is operated by researches and journalists. The website is edited by Aldo Santiago. History Avispa Mídia is a collective that started in Brazil towards the end of 2014, and the start of 2015, in the aftermath of the Iguala mass kidnapping. Contributors to the website are located throughout the Americas, but mostly in Mexico. Extractivism
Extractivism is the process of extracting natural resources from the Earth to sell on the world market. It exists in an economy that depends primarily on the extraction or removal of natural resources that are considered valuable for exportation worldwide. Some examples of resources that are obtained through extraction include gold, diamonds, lumber and oil. This economic model has become popular in many Latin American countries but is becoming increasingly prominent in other regions as well. Many factors are involved in the process of extractivism. These include but are not limited to community members, transnational corporations (TNCs) and the government. Trends have demonstrated that countries do not often extract their own resources; extraction is often led from abroad. The Moody College of Communication is the communication college at The University of Texas at Austin. The college is home to top-ranked programs in advertising and public relations, communication studies, communication sciences and disorders, journalism, and radio-television-film. The Moody College is nationally recognized for its faculty members, research and student media. Iguala Mass Kidnapping
On September 26, 2014, forty-three male students disappeared from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College after being forcibly abducted in Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico. They were allegedly taken into custody by local police officers from Iguala and Cocula in collusion with organized crime. The mass kidnapping has caused continued international protests and social unrest, leading to the resignation of Guerrero Governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero in the face of statewide protests on October 23, 2014. The students had annually commandeered several buses to travel to Mexico City to commemorate the anniversary of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre; police attempted to intercept several of the buses by using roadblocks and firing weapons.
