Avis Christiansen
Avis Marguerite Burgeson Christiansen (also known by the pen names of Avis Burgesson, Christian B. Anson and Constance B. Reid) (October 11, 1895 – January 14, 1985) was an American Christian hymnwriter. She wrote the lyrics to " Blessed Redeemer" with Harry Dixon Loes writing the music. Avis Marguerite Burgeson was born in 1895 in Chicago, Illinois to a Christian family and wrote poems as a child. Avis Christiansen became a member of the Moody Memorial Church in 1915 and remained a member for forty years serving in various ministries. A hymnwriter (or hymn writer, hymnist, hymnodist, hymnographer, etc.) is someone who writes the text, music, or both of hymns. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, the composition of hymns dates back to before the time of David, who composed many of the Psalms. The term hymnodist, in the United States more than in other regions, broadens the scope to include the study of hymns. Blessed Redeemer
Blessed Redeemer is a prominent Christian hymn with lyrics by Avis Christiansen and music by Harry Dixon Loes of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Loes developed the music and title after hearing a sermon entitled "Blessed Redeemer," and he asked Christiansen to write the lyrics. The hymn describes Jesus' death and atonement for sin on the cross at Calvary in Jerusalem as described in Matthew's and Mark's gospels in the New Testament for the redemption of sinners as explained in the New Testament Book of Romans. Harry Dixon Loes
Harry Dixon Loes (October 20, 1892 – February 9, 1965) was an American composer and teacher, best known for his arrangement of the gospel song "This Little Light of Mine". Loes was a prolific composer and hymn writer, hymnal editor, and music professor, as well as musical director in several churches and an evangelist for more than a dozen years. Life Harry Loes was born in Kalamazoo as the son of Fred Loes and Louise Novak Loes. He was the musical director in several churches. Subsequently Loes became involved in evangelistic work for more than a dozen years. Afterwards he became a music teacher at the Moody Bible Institute in 1939, where he worked until his death. Moody Bible Institute (MBI) is a private evangelical Christian Bible college founded in the Near North Side of Chicago, Illinois, US by evangelist and businessman Dwight Lyman Moody in 1886.
