John Keith Avery, (7 August 1927 – 19 May 2018) was the Commissioner of the New South Wales Police from 1984 to 1991. Commissioner of New South Wales Police John Keith Avery was the 17th leader of the organisation and the 10th person known under the title of Commissioner of Police. Avery was one of the longest serving and more popular Commissioners of Police to serve the state of New South Wales. One of the first Police Commissioners to have a tertiary education, Avery held a master's degree from Macquarie University and a Diploma in Criminology. He was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia, Australian Police Medal, Centenary Medal and National Medal. John Avery (February 29, 1824 – January 21, 1914) was a physician and politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. He served two terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1893 to 1897. Early life and education Avery was born in Watertown, New York and moved with his parents to Michigan in 1836. He attended the common schools and entered Grass Lake Academy in Jackson, where he studied medicine for two years. He graduated from the Cleveland Medical College in 1850 and commenced the practice of medicine in Ionia, Michigan. He then moved to Otsego, Michigan, in 1852 and continued the practice of his profession. Civil War service During the American Civil War, he was assistant surgeon and surgeon of the Twenty-first Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry. Early life Avery was born in Cornwall, England and emigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony as a child with his parents. Ephraim Kingsbury Avery (December 18, 1799 – October 23, 1869) was a Methodist minister who was among the first clergymen tried for murder in the United States. Avery is often cited as "the first", although it is thought there is at least Evan Jones (missionary), one case that precedes Avery's. The murder On December 21, 1832, farmer John Durfee of Tiverton, Rhode Island, discovered a woman's corpse hanging by her neck from a rope tied to a stackpole used to dry hay. Carlos Avery
Carlos Avery (1868–1930), was an American newspaper publisher and politician in the state of Minnesota. Avery is best remembered as a longtime chief of the Minnesota Game and Fish Commission and was named the first Commissioner of the Game and Fish Commission when that position was created in August 1915. He is the namesake of the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area in that state. Brian Avery (born 1979) is an American who, while volunteering for the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) in the West Bank town of Jenin, was shot in the face by Israel Defense Forces on April 5, 2003. William P. "Bill" Avery (born February 7, 1942) is a politician from the state of Nebraska in the Midwestern United States. He served two terms in the Nebraska Legislature, from 2007 to 2015. Avery is a retired adjunct professor of political science who specializes in international trade and foreign relations. Born in Harnett County, North Carolina, he received his BS and M.A. from the University of Tennessee and his PhD from Tulane University. Rosa Miller Avery
Rosa Miller Avery , Miller; ( pen name, Sue Smith and unknown male pseudonyms; May 21, 1830 – November 9, 1894) was an American abolitionist, political reformer, second-generation suffragist, and writer. Avery's childhood home was a noted " underground railroad station". As an adult, while living in Ashtabula, Ohio, she organized the first anti-slavery society of that time in that section of the United States. During the Civil War, she wrote constantly for the various papers and journals of that day on the union and emancipation, using a male pseudonym in order to gain attention. Many of her articles and responses to the opponents of franchise for women appeared in the '' Chicago Inter-Ocean''.
