Lake Avernus
__NOTOC__ Lake Avernus ( it, Lago d'Averno) is a volcanic crater lake located in the Avernus crater in the Campania region of southern Italy, around west of Pozzuoli. It is near the volcanic field known as the Phlegraean Fields (') and comprises part of the wider Campanian volcanic arc. The lake is roughly circular, measuring in circumference and deep. Roman era Avernus was of major importance to the Romans, who considered it to be the entrance to Hades. Roman writers often used the name as a synonym for the underworld. In Virgil's ''Aeneid'', Aeneas descends to the underworld through a cave near the lake. In Hyginus' ''Fabulae'', Odysseus also goes to the lower world from this spot, where he meets Elpenor, his comrade who went missing at Circe's place. Despite the alleged dangers of the lake, the Romans were happy to settle its shores, on which villas and vineyards were established. Avernus
Avernus was an ancient name for a volcanic crater near Cumae (Cuma), Italy, in the region of Campania west of Naples. Part of the Phlegraean Fields of volcanoes, Avernus is approximately in circumference. Within the crater is Lake Avernus ('). Role in ancient Roman society Avernus was believed to be the entrance to the underworld, and is portrayed as such in the ''Aeneid'' of Virgil. According to tradition, all birds flying over the lake were destined to fall dead, hence the lake’s name was transferred to Greek as ‚ or "Birdless (lake)". This was likely due to the toxic fumes that mouths of the crater gave off into the atmosphere. In later times, the word was simply an alternative name for the underworld. On the shores of the lake is the grotto of the Cumaean Sibyl and the entrance to a long tunnel (Grotta di Cocceio, c. ) leading toward Cumae, where her sanctuary was located. ''Averno'' is Louise Glück's tenth collection of poetry published in 2006 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. It was a National Book Award Finalist for Poetry that year. Content Averno or Lake Avernus is a lake west of Naples that the Romans mythologized as the entrance to the underworld. The Greek myth of Demeter's daughter Persephone and her marriage to Hades Hades (; grc-gre, ᾍδης, Háidēs; ), in the ancient Greek religion and myth, is the god of the dead and the king of the underworld, with which his name became synonymous. Hades was the eldest son of Cronus and Rhea, although this also ... is a recurring topic in the collection, as are the themes of oblivion and death, soul and body, love and isolation. Renato Ruíz Cortes (born May 9, 1977) is a Mexican professional wrestler better known by the ring name Averno (''Hell''). Ruíz initially worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) as Rencor Latino in 1995, but did not achieve any significant success until he adopted the ring name Averno in June 2001. Under his new ring name, Ruíz went on to become a one–time CMLL World Middleweight, CMLL World Trios Champion, NWA World Middleweight Champion and NWA World Historic Middleweight Champion and a three–time CMLL World Tag Team Champion. His ring name is most commonly translated as " Hell" in English. For many years Averno's real name was not a matter of public record, as is often the case with masked wrestlers in Mexico where their private lives are kept a secret from the wrestling fans. Averno (universe)
Averno was a transmedia franchise, described by ''the New York Times'' as "a 'Marvel Universe' for musicals". The franchise included multiple musicals, a podcast, a short film, an alternate reality game, and more, all taking place in and around the fictional small town of Averno, Virginia. The Averno universe was created in 2019 by then-20-year-old Morgan Smith and became fully established in 2020. The planning/development/concept art team has since grown to more than 60 members all around the world. The Averno universe encouraged fan content, although only concepts approved by the creator, Morgan Smith, are considered canon. Sushi Soucy, a member of the concept team and composer of the musical ''Over and Out'', described the universe as "witchy and magical."
