''Auto da Compadecida'' is a play written by Ariano Suassuna, published in 1955. Its first production was in 1956 in Recife, Pernambuco. ''Auto da Compadecida'' is a comedy of Northeast Region, Brazil, northeast Brazil. Ariano Suassuna
Ariano Vilar Suassuna (; 16 June 1927 – 23 July 2014) was a Brazilian playwright and author. He was the driving force behind the creation of the ''Movimento Armorial''. He founded the Student Theater at Federal University of Pernambuco. Four of his plays have been filmed, and he was considered one of Brazil's greatest living playwrights of his time. He was also an important regional writer, doing various novels set in the Northeast of Brazil. He received an honorary doctorate at a ceremony performed at a circus. He was the author of, among other works, the ''Auto da Compadecida'' and ''A Pedra do Reino''. He was a staunch defender of the culture of the Northeast, and his works dealt with the popular culture of the Northeast. Pernambuco () is a state of Brazil, located in the Northeast region of the country. Cordel Literature
Cordel literature (from the Portuguese term, ''literatura de cordel'', literally “string literature”, ) are popular and inexpensively printed booklets or pamphlets containing folk novels, poems and songs. They are produced and sold in street markets and by street vendors in Brazil, mainly in the Northeast. They are so named because they are hung from strings to display them to potential customers, and the word for rope in Portuguese is ''corda'', from which the term ''cordel'' is derived. ''A Dog's Will'' ( pt, O Auto da Compadecida}, literally "The Compassionate Woman's Play", the woman being the Virgin Mary) is a 2000 Brazilian fantasy comedy film directed by Guel Arraes, who co-wrote the screenplay with Adriana Falcão and João Falcão. It is based on a similarly named play by Ariano Suassuna, with elements of some other of Suassuna's plays, ''The Ghost and the Sow'' and ''Torture of a Heart''. Plot João Grilo (Matheus Nachtergaele), referred to as "Jack the Cricket” in the English subtitles, and Chicó (Selton Mello) are two poor men living in an arid, desert-like region of North-East Brazil in the 1930s. João is constantly hungry and malnourished, relying on his charm and silver tongue to fool the townsfolk for his own gain.
