"Author! Author!" is a fantasy short story by American writer and scientist Isaac Asimov. Background By January 1943 Isaac Asimov was working at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and had not written any fiction for almost a year. Still hoping to be published in ''Unknown'' after five rejections, he began writing "Author! Author!" and in April finished it and sold it to editor John W. Campbell for $150. Philadelphia Navy Yard
The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard was an important naval shipyard of the United States for almost two centuries. Philadelphia's original navy yard, begun in 1776 on Front Street and Federal Street in what is now the Pennsport section of the city, was the first naval shipyard of the United States. It was replaced by a new, much larger yard developed around facilities begun in 1871 on League Island, at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. The Navy Yard expansion stimulated the development over time of residential and businesses in South Philadelphia, where many shipyard workers lived. During World War II, some 40,000 workers operated on shifts around the clock to produce and repair ships at the yard for the war effort. ''Unknown'' (also known as ''Unknown Worlds'') was an American pulp fantasy fiction magazine, published from 1939 to 1943 by Street & Smith, and edited by John W. Campbell. ''Unknown'' was a companion to Street & Smith's science fiction pulp, ''Astounding Science Fiction'', which was also edited by Campbell at the time; many authors and illustrators contributed to both magazines. ''The Unknown Five'' is an anthology of American fantasy fiction short stories edited by D. R. Bensen and illustrated by Edd Cartier, the fourth of a number of anthologies drawing their contents from the American magazine ''Unknown'' of the 1930s-1940s. It was first published in paperback by Pyramid Books in January 1964. The cover title of this first edition was ''The Unknown 5''; the numeral was spelled out on the title page and copyright statement. The book was reprinted by Jove/HBJ in October 1978. It has also been translated into German. It was a follow-up to a companion anthology, '' The Unknown'', issued in 1963. The book collects five tales by various authors, together with an introduction by the editor.
