Austria National American Football Team
The Austrian national American football team is the official American football senior national team of Austria. Its players are mostly recruited from the Austrian Football League but a few also play in other European leagues, mostly the German Football League. European Championship record The team placed third at the 1995 European Championship of American football (hosted by Austria) and also third place in the 2010 European Championship. The Team placed second at the 2014 European Championship (hosted in Austria), losing the final in double overtime to Germany in front of 27000 spectators at Vienna's Ernst-Happel-Stadion and placed second again in 2018. The 2021 European Championship of American football was less successful for Austria as they unexpectedly lost against Italy in the group phase and thus only placed fifth overall. American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs or plays; if they fail, they turn over the football to the defense, but if they succeed, they are given a new set of four downs to continue the drive. Points are scored primarily by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the opponent's goalposts for a field goal. The 1999 IFAF World Championship was the inaugural IFAF World Championship, an international American football championship run by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). It was played in Palermo, Italy from 24 June to 4 July 1999. The tournament was contested by six nations and was won by Japan. 2015 IFAF World Championship
The 2015 IFAF World Championship was the fifth instance of the IFAF World Championship, an international American football tournament. The United States hosted the tournament. Seven teams had confirmed their participation for the tournament in Canton, Ohio. The tournament was to be hosted by Stockholm, Sweden with all games to be taken place at the new Tele2 Arena, but on 19 December 2014, the local organizing committee for the Stockholm 2015 VM Amerikansk fotboll announced that it could not raise the sponsor structure to run the event and thus had to cancel. 2011 IFAF World Championship
The 2011 IFAF World Championship was the fourth instance of the IFAF World Championship, an international American football tournament. It began on July 8, 2011 with the final games commencing on July 16. It was hosted by Austria, with games taking place in three cities: Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz; Vienna hosted the medal games. Austria won the bid to host the games. There were a record number of attendees at the 2009 IFAF Congress, the meeting which decided the host nation. The format was changed for 2011: for the first time, eight qualifying teams were divided into two groups, with the group winners competing for the Championship. The 2023 European Championship is the 16th European Championship in American football. The preliminary round will be played around Europe from 8 October to 5 November 2022. The final round will be played in August and October 2023. Group A, first round The first round was played around Europe from 8 October to 5 November 2022. It saw 11 teams divided to four groups. Russia was due to be the 12th nation participating as the 3rd team in group 1 but the nation was removed from the tournament due to ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
